How does everyone manage keeping up to date?

This is another good reason for trimming one's tool set down: makes it easier to keep track of updates. However, even though I've been making a conscious effort to limit my plugins, it's still a challenge and sometimes I go a month or more before accidentally finding out there's an update to one of my less-used items.

I, too, often rely on cclarry for the heads-up. Even when there's a vendor update notification in my in-box I'll still often read about it here first.

What's really needed is a central database, preferably one that the vendors themselves keep up-to-date. KVR would be the logical place to host such a resource. It would contain a list of products, their current version, the date the current version was released, and a link to the change log.

That last bit's important because not all updates are worth bothering with. Sometimes the only thing that's changed is they've added an AU or AAX version, or fixed a bug that only applies to FL Studio.

Mike, feel free to start that database!

Dave,

Some think cclarry is that database.

First, always make sure you have a backup image file of your boot drive.
That way (no matter what happens), you can quickly/easily get back to a properly functioning DAW.

If you're in the middle of a critical project (or you're on a tight deadline), that's not the time to update/upgrade.

Bit has a very valid point about paring down the "toolbox".
That makes updating/upgrading a much simpler process.
Liken the situation to hardware:
Having numerous guitars/basses/keyboards is cool... but (to me) at some point the maintenance is more of a pain than it's worth.

Starting now Dave. The clay has arrived for the tablets, just waiting for the kilns to be installed. Also looking for a reasonable sized forge to make the chisels. Then I'm set to go. What? You want to help. OK, if you insist.

I'm with you. I don't install for the sake of it but once you add up all the software and extras there's certainly a bit of inventory to maintain.
No doubt once I've got the database sorted, things will be better. My only concern is sharing of the clay tablets once completed. I guess you could all come over to my place and read them whenever you want.
If only there was a way of distributing information that didn't necessitate these damned heavy clay tablets. There's something called paper that I've heard about. i believe it's hard to mass produce. Only just learned how to mix clay. Haven't a clue on this modern stuff.

cclarryEvery day I run my online installers 3 times...morning, afternoon, and evening

That's really obsessive. I check every few weeks. There's really no need to check too often if the plugin isn't bugging out. The exception to this is Sonar but we know we're only getting updates at this point once a month and most of us are on here to see it anyway.

Not for plugins....for VI's and DAW's....Cake Command Center, Avid Installation Center, EastWest Installation Center, XLN Installation Center...etc...

They are not very adept at keeping you posted on updates....

Thanx Fleer!  I work surprisingly hard at keeping everyone well informed...
and am happy to do it!  Call it obsessive if you will...
