hey i've been mixing for like 24 hours and my ears are shot. is there anyone bored with a fresh set of ears who needs a mix to listen to?
not my song (Pete Murray/Neil Godfrey from LoPro are songwriters) I'm just singing the harmonies, the 'bow your head' part in choruses, and I'm playing lead guitars/vamps.  Pete's got an amazing primal scream voice like the dude from Filter. Friggin incredible range. Shredding. Verses and bridge have  cool blend of Pete's tenor and my baritone layered vox. Neil is truly a solid guitar player as well.  You might remember the MRI song "Letters Never Sent" with Eastern flavor that Pete guest appears on.  This has a similar vibe in intro and outro.  so it kinda sounds like LoPro/MRI which doh i guess it should lol.  anyway my ears are shot i'm trying to listen in simulator audio environments and can't distinguish anything anymore. on a bit of a deadline so like i said if anyone has nothing to do... this is a rough rough mix. it's LOUD and compressed as hell as per NuMetal/Grunge genre. but tasteful/unique/visceral . thanks in advance to anyone :) {oh btw song is about rock stars}

Bow Down
© 2013 Pete Murray/ LoPro [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lo-Pro ]

Bow down to the one who sings
Bow down to the gift he brings
Bow down to the one who sings
Bow down or so he thinks

Bow down
(Bow your head)
(Bow your head)
(Bow your head)

Bow down to the one who sings
Bow down to the gift he brings
Bow down to the one who sings
Bow down to anything

Bow down
(Bow your head)
(Bow your head)
(Bow your head)

No your luck is not genius
No your luck will not save us

Bow down
(Bow your head)
(Bow your head)
(Bow your head)

Pete Murray: vocals
Neil Godfrey: guitars
Daren Thomas Turner: vocals, guitars
Tommy Stewart[Godsmack]: drums
Neil Godfrey: bass

if I had to guess what this would look like under a spectrascope, I would expect it would look like a slanting line at about a 30 degree angle off the x axis. You need to bring the high end down, look toward 8k. Mids are ok so far, that may change, bottom needs to come up a lot.

I really like this song.

Hey Shad- thanks for this very much bro as it will help me dial in better some things. I had a feeling about the low end - I'm going to rest my ears another day and get back to work. grateful for your taking the time to point me in right direction.

cheers!

This song has great potential.  It's a little harsh right now, but that may be due to ear fatigue.  Like you say, take a break and come back to it later.  There's a gem hidden in this.

Daren:

Big @ss song for sure. The relative size of the drums gets squashed once the guitars come in.  Everything is stepping all over everything else. The bass is kinda indistinct, but that could be a stylistic choice.

Pretty awesome song! It does seem the kick/snare need to be louder or more punchy, I can't feel/hear them as much as I would like, especially for the heavy rock genre

hey this is awesome everyone thanks - listening back now with the comments I can agree with everything. also I forgot to mention that they will be doing final mix including drums so I'm making notes. I'm only more or less in control of my own parts and I'm trying to dial them in better -
I can target frequencies in the drums here but don't have access to track levels on drums - this is their rough mix down which obviously needs to be tweaked. I'm trying here to achieve balance on vox haonies & guitar layers etc...as there are 5 of my harmonies blended in verses and bridge

Wow, I can see why your ears are shot, Daren... I don't envy you trying to mix that bad boy.  Great tune and all, but a monster to mix.  I'd agree with James: it sounds like everything is louder than everything else .  I would humbly suggest starting by figuring out what you want to be the dominant element(s) in the mix, pull everything else back to zip and start from there.  Just a thought.

It definitly needs a decongestant.

Once you have each individual instrument sounding the way you want, I would start with the drums, then add in the bass and then each instrument in turn. All the while, keeping things better balanced and seperated. Try mixing at a barely audible level. Keep in mind though, the lows and highs will fool you as at low volumes, they are harder to hear.

No easy feat.

Good work so far! Don't spend to long on one thing.
