My son has been bugging me in a joking way to give him two of my vinyl Johnny Cash albums. For his recent birthday I surprised him with both. I honestly think those meant more to him than any of his other presents. Maybe because he knew that sentimental value they had to me. The bad news is I'm out of my albums, but happy my son is happy and that he has an appreciation for things many of his peers do not.

@ Dub,

Very selfless and thoughtful of you.

For anyone who also happens to stumble on this topic:
Johnny Cash was also highly respected in the film/TV industry and is certainly not just another county musician/writer, his music was way more than that e.g.  Gospel, Rockability and Rock n Roll, which I think (correct me if I'm wrong) won honors (Hall of Fame) for each of those categories.

Johnny Cash will never be forgotten; he continues to inspire and influence many musicians/writers, amazingly, a very diverse range of styles/genres from Punk bands to dare I say on these forums, Pop and R&B i.e. Justine Timberlake's co-written release 'Cry Me A River', whilst accepting an award for 'Best Video' Justin Timberlake honored, with all due respect said, "My grandfather raised me on Johnny Cash, and I think he deserves this more than any of us in here tonight" (Justin Timberlake)!

Thanks Songcraft. He is my only son and just an awesome person. so it was the least I could do. Johnny did transcend genres.  I find many people who did not like Country (and several other genres he is categorized as) liked him.  My son got an introduction to his music from me but really started to appreciate him after seeing "Walk the Line" with me. I think i am going to start a tradition of getting him original copies of album on vinyl.  i have a still in the plastic copy of the "Coffee"  soundtrack i know he has been eyeing as well.  Maybe next birthday

Somehow I never pegged you as a Johnny Cash fan..... interesting!

Cash was one of the original music outlaws.... good to hear that you and your son are fans.

You could probably pick up the albums again - stuff is getting re-pressed all the time now.

I have very eclectic musical tastes. My paternal grandmother listened to nothing but country. I was raised playing jazz and classical and was in gospel choir. I think i can find someone from just about any genre i can relate to.
