How old is your son?  Sounds like a good kid.

He just turned 16 and I am so glad he is one of the most respectful and mannered people i know. Being a single dad is scary but maybe I'm doing something right.

My son has been bugging me in a joking way to give him two of my vinyl Johnny Cash albums. For his recent birthday I surprised him with both. I honestly think those meant more to him than any of his other presents. Maybe because he knew that sentimental value they had to me. The bad news is I'm out of my albums, but happy my son is happy and that he has an appreciation for things many of his peers do not.

I thought the bad news was that he crushed or melted them.

You could probably pick up the albums again - stuff is getting re-pressed all the time now.

Doesn't that defeat the purpose since those items weren't present when significant life moments occur. At least he'd have the songs back though. I thought about just saying download the digital versions or buying a CD, but I realize those arent the original items in question.

My son has cds of the albums but shares y feeling that there is something magical about holding an original vinyl once enjoyed by someone decades ago.

I'm no lover of country music, or religion, but I love hearing Cash singing 'When The Man Comes Around'...spinetingling.

Dub, it might be a generational thing, or just our obviously excellent parenting skills, but both my kids (B17; G15) love listening to Johnny Cash too.
 
I've always thought of him as a kind of 'punk' C&W performer, should such a concept make any sense to anyone.

Nice cover. Speaking of covers. His version of "Hurt" took the song way past what Nine Inch Nails ever could. No disrespect to NIN but evoking emotion was not Reznor's strength.

I played JC's cover of Hurt for my mom a few years back and she started crying.

DF guitarist Sam Totman on that cover: "We got tired of hearing bands play covers exactly the same as the original and we always thought Johnny Cash was pretty cool. So we were like, let see what happens if we speed him up to 220BPM and plaster it with shredding guitars and huge soaring vocals and choirs! Basically give him an EXTREME DragonForce overhaul! Some people gonna love it, some might hate it but you definitely never heard Johnny Cash like THIS!!!”

After he died all the punk/hardcore/thrash bands in our scene did a tribute gig. They were all asked to learn and perform a few songs. My bands were "too cool" to do it (wankers). I got asked to do my acoustic versions. So amongst an evening of fully cranked mayhem I did my three songs just me and my acoustic. No one was really watching or paying attention. No bigs. I finished up and saddled up to the bar where everyone was getting hammied. The bartender (a buddy of mine who was in one of the hardcore acts) said "uh... aren't you supposed to be on around now?". I said "I just played... didn't you see me up there?". He, and all the drunkards at the bar, essentially said they thought they were listening to studio outakes of JC being played through the board (which has been going on between sets all night) and freaked out a little.
