I had a JCM800 with a 1960 slant 4x12 cabinet. Lost the 800 in the pawn shop back in the '90s (long story). Now I have a Class 5 head with the 1960. I like it, especially after replacing the EL84 with an NOS Mullard, and putting in a couple long plate RCA 12AX7's.

RAIN... you really need to STOP. You know how easily influenced I am. You may not know that I have always wanted a 100w Marshall. I used to have a 50w JMP head. It was modded and I never really liked it but I've wanted a Vintage/Modern or the two channel JTM (the newest amp) for several years. I have an EL-34 JTM-60 1x12 combo now but it doesn't quite nail that plexi vibe.
Have you checked out the Fargen amps? They have some awesome amps that really nail the Marshall thing but have manageable volume controls. They have a Mini-Plex, one that is a ittle bigger, then they have a nice 800 series clone. I think it is the Olde 800.
I don't need a 100w 4x12 Marshall monster but it don't stop me from wanting one... but the Mini-Plex, I could actually use!

So... STOP IT... OK?

I've played through a JCM800 for over 30 years. Great head, all original tubes, 100w. It still has that incredible Marchall sound that can't be replicated. But with a 4x12 half stack slanted cab, it just became a bear to lug around. I wound up with a MA100C. A 2x12 combo, 100w. It's there Asian version of the same amp. Same engineering, but all Asian parts. It is an incredible amp for the money. Same great Marshall tone, power and attitude. I use it on gigs and some recordings.

But for practice and most recording situation, nothing beats my Fender Champ 12.  12w, 12 inch speaker. Super clean channel with treble boost and a hard gain with a very smooth overdrive.

I've already spent more than the price of that rig on amps and sims in the last few years, and I could probably spend 100k on amps - Orange, Vox, Fender, Boogie, or any sound-alike - only to end up still wanting a Marshall.

I've learned that I was better off buying what I want in the first place - otherwise, I'm wasting money on alternatives only to end up realizing that I should have bought the real thing in the first place.

Yes, and what you said earlier, (good advise) >>> I still have to test it in person - and to wait for the budget, but, things are looking' good.

Use the internet to research and narrow it down to a select line of amps/speakers (as you are doing now), and hope the music store has them in stock (to test)!

Good luck, I'm sure you'll find something ideal

My prefers are along the lines of Vox or Marshall and no less than 50 watts... unless I have a man cave (studio) buried deep under a Rock, totally isolated from any sign of civilization,   yeah I'm still working on that. Oh well.

Naturally, "my" solution would be to get the Orange, Vox, Fender, Boogie AND the Marshall.

(Along with an Egnator, Bogner, Peavey, Soldano, Sovtek, VHT, etc., etc., etc....)

*Sigh...*
