Hiya.  Got a new singer, brought her into the studio to get her voice recorded.

This was her first time recording, and she was so easy to work with.

Drums are Session Drummer 3 Gretch Kit, I used staff notation for the bass line, just as a good exercise for myself, guitar parts are done with a Jackson SL2 into a Fractal Axe Fx with my custom tones I use for playing live.

Vocals were an AKG 414 into a Grace 101.  I just used a light reverb in the Breverb program, can't even remember what it was, and some easy comp/limiting with the Sonitus dbx 165.  Izotope used for mastering.

Thoughts opinions criticism and praise appreciated.

It seemed a little low-mid heavy to me, but it could be the headphones I'm wearing. Don't have my good monitors hooked up. She's a good singer and it's a great performance for her first recording. There were a couple of spots when she sang lower where her voice quivered ever so slightly, but hey ... if this is her first time, can't complain at all. It's a great start.

Really nice song.  She's got a good voice.  I have a feeling she'll just keep improving as she records more too.

Thanks to both of you.  In many ways she was very easy to record as sibilance was not a problem, and she's got a good sense of rhythm.  It was kind of funny as we looked at the recorded tracks, and they were all the 'same' with the soundwaves.  I pointed it out to her and we laughed.

About the only real struggle for me was that her levels on low notes were very, very quiet, and I had to boost her a little more than I would like, which added a touch of noise to the recording.  I didn't want to cloud her head with worrying about technique so I just boosted her via nodes/volume.  Side note---there are times where I prefer doing that over using a comp/limiter, but mostly it's relative to the amount of time I have available.

She's going to be a blast to work with.  She introduced me to this song, and I fell in love with it immediately.

It seems like your partnership is very promising.  As Janet said, she'll just get better, and if you produce songs of this quality, look out!

Thanks again to everyone for all the kind words, it's doing wonders to boost Hannah's confidence.  For what it's worth, this song hit #1 on the silly soundclick rock-cover songs charts.  She's being somewhat coy about it, but I know she's walking around on cloud 9.  I think next up we'll do a cover of an AC DC song--ha ha ha!  Hoping to be gigging in about a month, rehearsals are going well.  We're going to be covering quite a variety of songs, from Pink Floyd to The Band Perry to Megadeth and we close the night with Sinatra's 'My Way'.  To me, it's one of the most perfect songs ever written.

Not bad at all for her first time! The first couple of lines were a bit tentative, but it sounds like she got more confident as she went.

Good luck!

Dan
