   A really great song. Love the timeless harmonies and flute. There were a few minor things about the production, like the piano on the right stuck out just a tad IMO. Lots going on this, I couldn't have done any better with the sound engineering. I keep trying to listen for production reasons and keep getting distracted by the great music:) Congrats

This was like a journey to the past in terms of production and  feel.  It has a certain 60s vibe which I find appealing.  There are mix issues in regards to a lack of bass and the drum mix.  I finally heard the bass drum about halfway through.  And, there are a few timing and pitch issues in the vocals.  I only bring this up because you put the vocals front and center in the mix.  But, you're only a few tweaks away from a good mix.  There's much potential here.

I agree there are some minor adjustments to the mix needed. Those are pretty simple to tweak. What needs to be addressed (IMO) is the vox. The lower vox track is not working for me. While I like the "Squeeze" like style, it is little more than an octave shift and not harmony. The levels are also too variable... one moment the higher octave vox are forward, then the next its the lower. I think you are on the right track though (pun intended). Not sure what Lynn meant about the bass though, it sounds fine here.

ohgrant - Thanks, I'm glad you liked the song. That's my first use of keyboards and I agree with you about the piano. I'm just learning about automation and I think this song could've really benefited from it.

Lynn - I'm getting a lot of "nice retro vibe" comments on the three songs I've managed so far. Do you think I should try to be a little more current sounding, or does it matter. I'm definitely finding bass and drums a struggle, both playing/programming and mixing. I just listened back to the song and yeah, there's a couple of embarrassing vocal things in there. Oops.

foxwolfen - this is the first time I tried vocals like that (in terms of note choices) and don't really know what I'm doing, but just kind of winging it. A lot of firsts for me the last few weeks. I really appreciate the comments, they're incredibly helpful, as I am determined to get better. I've got to be less excited about having a new song and take a little more time before posting.

That lead instrument? (The stringed one in the beginning?) Not so much... I like the sound of the song? And the performances. Gave me a Simon and Garfunkle vibe.

The Band19 - That acoustic guitar intro, is it the sound or what's being played that you weren't too keen on? I'm glad you liked the song, thanks for tuning in.

To answer your question, keep writing what you know and feel, and don't worry about being contemporary.  I'm hearing the bass drum better today, but still straining to hear the bass guitar.

I really liked the song and the arrangement of this. There are a few mix issues that others have described better than i'm qualified to with this type of track. One thing i think the mix needed was some reverb as it sounds a bit flat and a more powerful sounding drum kit would sound better. Overall though, an enjoyable listen.

I agree, the song has potential... good advise above... keep whackin' away at it...  well done...
