This is a great opportunity for Cakewalk to either jump on the bandwagon or to (preferably/hopefully) move in the opposite direction than Propellerhead. It's a chance to reaffirm their commitment to their customers instead of shutting them out as Propellerhead is doing.
 
Considering that these current Sonar forums have no truly functional search feature and that looking for updated threads is astoundingly tedious (multiple entries for every single post in an updated thread, etc), perhaps these forums should be rethought. These forums could be made easier to view and to actually <gasp> function as expected... otherwise their purpose seems a token gesture.
 
So commit... and fix things... or go jump on that band wagon. The 3rd choice is apathy of coarse, but what business ever grew that was apathetic?

I think I was looking at it from the perspective of someone who also uses reason - standalone and rewire and thinking it would also be interesting to other reason users here.  There was a lot of info about how the forums degenerated over time... something that has been said about the sonar forums as well on occassion.  I think the several posts from current sonar users was interesting, but even more so the comments from devs of rack extensions that they sell through the ph shop.  
One thing about their forum was it did turn into a s#!tstorm every time a new version was released.  Kind of like the sonar forum, but to a much greater extent the last couple of years.  
If you were familiar with the basic layout of the reason forums, it was pretty much doomed from the get.  they had beginner, advanced and songs sub-forums.  I think cakewalk has, what, 12-16??  This pushed all the noise into of all places the advanced forum, which clogged up the whole process.  
I met some great people on their forums.  Really supportive.  People were always sharing ideas and patches.  The contests were really fun!  One of the guys on the forum, raymond hayter, would set a lot of them up and work with devs to allocate prizes and free rack extensions (reason's version of vsts).  In those aspects it was really awesome.  
My main thing though was can you imagine, even if you only had a hundred posts on the sonar forums (which isn't hard to do), that one day you'd be given a few days notice that all of these years of input and insight and shared experience would simply *poof* vanish?
I think my hat is off to cake for keeping their forums alive.  I dig this place a lot -- the reason forums were my second fave.  I show up here every day but there only every couple of weeks.   I was surprised to see them gone.  
I dunno.  Personally, I feel user forums sponsored by the company lend themselves to the overall experience of creating and this decision by Propellerheads really made left a negative impact on me.

Propellerheads forum had been hacked like 3 or 4 times in the last year and a half.  I totally see why they wouldn't want to support it anymore.
 
hackers and spammers the Props forum was a place I avoided like the plague.  easier to find out information by other sources.
 
Props didn't not really participate in their own forums - was just them hosting it.

Then they could have said that instead of the drivel they posted as their reason. spam is not tough to avoid. Remember a few months ago when we were getting spammed here?
Their staff were actually using the forums quite a bit but they started deleting posts and banning people pretty regularly - a lot of other users were left head scratching. It seems their staff lost any legitimacy at that point.

  I think the false information spread about the new Sonar (from non users) created a lot of confusion. Sonar was now compared to Avid.
   You always have people on the fence when it comes to upgrading. They are either content with what they have or they are messing around with other DAWs.   I've been on my last Sonar upgrade since Sonar 7. It's always the extra stuff that gets me. The AD Pro pack was hard to ignore since I have four machines and the license helps. This was one of the times though I really paid attention to the new features. I really love the new control bar.  That was the icing on the cake (no pun intended).
   Let's look at Reason 8.  I liked the new browser, a clincher for me. Now I realize it's kind of clumsy.  You can't audition synth patches like you use to.  Their add ons were two amp simulators as REs.  Really? They will replace the Line 6 gear.  Addition yet soon to be subtraction.  Look at the REs they've made. One could say they should have spent time making a better DAW than creating REs. Then the native started to up rise when a new user could get $450 in REs.  I think if they took a RE and made it into a Reason instrument that would smooth things over. They are expensive to being with.  One thing Cakewalk usually does is treat upgraders and new users equally when giving away toys.
  I like Reason's unique way of creating music but it's years behind most DAWs.  Importing an audio loop is not like Sonar or Live.  Importing a midi file is a joke because it opens up the ID8.  There is no option to switch a synth on that track. You have to open up another instrument and drag that midi file down.  The key commands are limited.  You have to go to a menu to initialize a synth now called reset synth.  A key command would be nice.  It lacks those things but yet it's a sophisticated device.  It's probably those most stable DAW I have.  I like it because you have limitations because there are not VSTs like Kontakt.
 They made some mistakes with their loyal users and it will be interesting what they do. Their 8 to 8.1 update was a joke.
 
 I think the difference here is the even with the confusion of the Sonar upgrade, the enemies will soon become friends and the loyal Reason users who are not fan boys will still be unhappy. I think they have legitimate gripes.
