Laid back somewhat progressive song (name has nothing to do with it being progressive...), its the first part of three tunes with a similar vibe.

Ya know, its hard to judge this song. On the one hand, every part is richly detailed and warm. Each instrument is clearly defined and present. But as a whole, its too much. This might be a matter of philosophy... when I listen to music, I often picture being there.. and the music provides me with an idea of where each instrument is in the room, and what the room itself is like. I ask myself things like, what would the piano sound like in relation to the other instruments in the arrangement and placement on this song. I get none of that with this song. It is just "there" in my head. The thing is, I cannot place my head into the piano tone box, and into the bass cab, and into the drum kit center all at once in the real world. It cannot actually sound like this in real life. I have no idea if the above makes sense to you, but if not, let me know and I will try to clarify.

Thanks for the comment foxwolfen. I agree with what I interpret your post to be about. There's a particular vibe with this song and with others that are being recorded that we (band/friends) can only describe as 'airy' or 'dreamy'. Instead of a live feel in which the band is clearly imagined, there's a thought of openness where the song appears imagined.

I understand your comment was hugging the line of unfavorable, so in a non philosophical light, do you see the songs production at fault, the performance, or the content.

I appreciate the feedback,

Philip, I love songs like this and separate them from productions that are meant to emulate a live performance.  I thought the production sounded huge, due to the f/x, but I liked it.  Radiohead came to mind because they produce recordings that one might not think could be done live, but they manage to play their music live, and they get away with it quite well.  Regardless, I like the song and the one that came after it.  If I haven't done so, yet, welcome to the forum.

Cool tune I like the palm muted arps in the begining. Great vocal melody going on there. really cool outro. Only thing I thought could add to it is a vocal harmony here and there. I did enjoy it very much as it is though, nice work.

Purely the mix man. I tend to try not to comment too much (though I do on occasion) on the composition or performance unless there are glaring errors that almost anybody would note. Lynn is right that it sounds huge. That is part of the problem (for me). Its *too* huge. There is a near total lack of dynamic contrast between the instruments. Even Radiohead preserves that. This is why the piano might need to be ... err... ensmallened and so on.

Hey Lynn thanks! I don't get to play out as much as I'd like, so I use the studio as my means to get my music heard. I totally feel up for the challenge now though to perform a live version of this tune!

ohgrant, glad you enjoyed it. I could definitely see some harmonies in there.

foxwolfen, thanks for catching up, I see what you mean. This song and 2 others of the same style are the only intense songs we have in terms of orchestrations and what not, so I did "produce" it a bit to fit the vibe. I'll be interested to get your opinion in the future with some others songs.
