Truth is I wouldn't want to be in any artist's shoes in this day and age. But even as a South Park fan, and as funny as those episodes were, I'd never quite seen things from that angle. It was so obvious to me that the guy deserved respect...

At the end of the day, Collins has had quite an impact on my life, from the first time I heard Mama on the radio to that time when I first heard Duke, and so on... A lot of people my age discovered Genesis through Collins.

I lost any respect for the guy around the time of the Sussudio / 1999 "rip-off" debate. In the interview I saw at the time he came across as very much up himself that anyone would dare suggest that any of his work sounds like anything else. Maybe if it didn't he might have had a point, but it just does. Personally I think quite a few of his own songs have a similarity to quite a few of his own songs, which I guess we are all guilty off occasionally, but the way he reacted to comments of similarity just made me think he was a bit of a tool really.

I liked a lot of his solo stuff, but he does tend to go too near to parody with the obvious love he has for Motown.

In 1986 I saw Peter Gabriel on the 'So' tour, which is to this day, the best concert I've seen. The next weekend I saw Genesis at Wembley Arena (Invisible Touch tour), and they just bored me to tears. The low point was when Collins donned 'Blues Brothers' hat and shades for a 20 minute medley of standards..it was bloody awful, and the crowd was baying for Genesis songs (unsurprisingly).

Having seen the sister documentary to 'When In Rome', from the reunion tour in 2006(?), 'Come rain Or Shine', he does indeed come across as a complete tool, and obviously didn't want to be there at all.

I didn't brake anything... I swear!

My mommy and daddy used to tell me all about the "big bad cruel world" way back when I was little.
To this day I'm afraid to look outside the door, let alone become famously popular, rich and wealthy, only to suffer at the hands of untold millions of haters who gonna hate.

My shades are drawn!

They can find my untold hundreds of hit home recordings after I'm gone. THEN I'll be rich and famous! THEN they can hash and bash me to their hearts content 'cause THEN I won't care!

Phil Collins always will be a big part of who I am today.  His ballads and his progressive story lyrics in solo and Genesis songs were phenomenal to a teenager/young adult in the late 70's through mid 80's.

I don't care what kind of attitude he had at different interviews.  he will always be a top notch musician, producer and music marketing genius in my opinion.

Phil Collins came to my attention for his Hi Hat work on Nursery Cryme which is quite stunning.

It always amuses me the way the media/music business build people up and then take such great pleasure in knocking them down, usually those doing the knocking are actually the untalented wannabes, or up their own fundamental orifices skin wasters.  Just my Furry thoughts on the matter.

Phil Collins is a legend! It's fashionable to say you hate him in the same way it's fashionable to say you hate Microsoft. But the guy has recorded some absolutely brilliant music, let's face it. Can't Hurry Love was one of those rare covers that was better than the original, In the Air Tonight is a legendary pop tune which I see people singing along with (and air drumming to) every time it's played in a store, Against All Odds has one of the nicest chord progressions you'll ever hear, Mama has one of the most powerful melodies of the 80's. I've never been swayed by all the hatred.

To be honest, I don't recall even reading or watching an interview w/ him. He may or may not be a tool or whatever - I honestly don't know. That wouldn't be the first time the guys from South Park were right. ;)

His contributions as a musician seem undeniable to me, though.
