I always thought he was a pretty decent guitarist for Def Leppard.

What?  This thread is about someone else?  Not Phil Collen?  Oh...  Nevermind.  My bad.

See, now that would have done. That was funny. You didn't need the rest.

The good thing is that the article got me thinking that maybe it was time for me to check out those old Genesis records again, and I ended up the night listening to A Trick of the Tail. I'll probably go through the rest of the stuff as well, as I finally seem to get it. A bit like Rush last year, after a lifetime of intense dislike.

I'm really liking the sound of that album.

I was a bit familiar with some of those old records, but I've never been much of a prog rock fan.

His songs, voice, drumming, and production was a big influence on my and many others as well. I fee sorry that he pretty much lost his hearing.

Well, I actually like a lot of Phil's work (in my head I almost treat post-Peter Genesis as a different band) so I didn't want to make it sound that I was only jumping on the bash Phil bandwagon.

The man is one of the best drummers on the planet. I heard rumours that he had quit because of his physical condition. A bad back and severe tinnitus. He has made a tremendous contribution to music and is extremely talented. What's that ponce Noel Gallagher done to be remembered.

Actually, he's a damn fine songwriter. 'Little by Little', 'Half a World Away' and 'Don't Look Back in Anger' are superb songs, and he's a far better singer than his idiot brother.

Can't Hurry Love was one of those rare covers that was better than the original,

I'm going to go with 'No' on that.

Well you're entitled to your opinion of course. I just think his version nails the song perfectly, at least in comparison with the original.

I was a big fan of Genesis up to the departure of Steve Hackett. After that I did not but another album. That said I do not dislike the later Genesis or Phil Collins's solo work.

Seems to me the trend for emerging bands to ridicule the previous wave of big bands started with Punk new wave.

As for being the butt of endless jokes Eric Morcambe never let up on Des O'Conner.
