i think it helps to start with actual huge guitar sound first.....

a good mic will translate.

but the ROOM plays a big part.
and your choice of mic position.

of course,
brian may of queen,
handcrafted some pretty HUGE tones,
using a handmade amplifier made of junk, a 6" speaker, about 3/4 of one watt,
and a treble booster.

But don't forget, he used that one of kind, built from his childhood home fireplace,

I remember reading an interview w/ Jimmy Page way back in the early 90's - way before I started recording - and the quote "distance equals depth" stuck w/ me.

yes,
if you have a good sounding room,
you can use room mics, or distance mic, from a cab,
to place it in the mix,
rather than using roll-off of high end,
or fake reverb,
etc.

page new those techniques well,
even if they were novel at the time,
became very common very quickly.

he used low watt amps at first,
but his better tones came with time, and included larger marshalls,
which are not low watt amps.

Speaking of rooms and cabs. Or the lack thereof...

First I read of this 2-in-1 concept.

Me I'm still entertaining the idea of transforming the big closet into some kind of ISO booth. I don't think I have a room that would add anything beneficial to the sound. Unless I bring the cab downstairs to mic it.

I would like that huge guitar sound but I have short arms.
