One of the definitive versions of Merry Christmas Baby is by Charles Brown, but I've also come across a version by Charles Johnson (that sounds a bit like the 'Brown' version).

So I'm trying to get more info on the 'Johnson' version but there doesn't seem to be much info out there.

In fact some sites seem to confusion the two artists and other sites that post the song as being by Johnson are actually (according to the id3 tags) sung by Brown...

Does anybody have any insight on the Charles Johnson version that they can enlighten me with?

Many thanks and regards - and of course "Merry Christmas Baby" !!!

Charlie Johnson was the early stage name of Del Shannon. Perhaps that is the connection you are looking for?

Thanks for the replies.

Del Shannon's former name - wow, would never have guessed that !!

And as interesting as that is, don't think that's the connection since the singing voice and style are quite different.

No doubt to my ear the Charles Johnson singing Merry Christmas Baby is a black singer, again with a very similar voice to Charles Brown...

So similar it could indeed be the same person (and there is some confusion in the Johnson vs Brown name), but also a little bit different, ie. maybe a bit more mellow, smoother...

Of course if you Google "Charles Brown Merry Christmas Baby" you get lots of hits, but if you search for "Charles Johnson Merry Christmas Baby" you only get a few references - and as mentioned some of them actually leading back to Charles Brown...

Not the most important issue out there but it's kind of driving me crazy... LOL !!!

Happy Holidays

Attribution error was my first guess too. Possibly just mistakes, or leaked session mixes. Good luck. Happy Holidays to you too.
