When did that happen? I mean, if you don't do it when you have a chance to kick back and play, when are you going to twiddle knobs? 
 
Maybe I'm a dinosaur, but, give me a Marshall and I can pretty much get all the right tones I want.

While were at it - why bother play guitar at all? Why make any effort? Just kick back and listen to whatever crap you've been told was cool... 
 

All of my engineering is imaginary.  Does that count? 

Like synth presets? - You have got to be able to twiddle knobs even if its just a little bit.

Another example of finding a solution to a non-existent problem.

And with EZMix, track presets and all that stuff we're not supposed to twiddle anything! We even get guitars that tune them self and drummers are nicely tucked away in little boxes. I just bought a new computer and expect to just switch it on and BAM - I have a hit song!
 
Or I could do it the old school way and love it. But I agree with OP, I saw this kid on stage, plugging in his guitar and had no idea how to use the amp. Eventually he found his volume. His playing was excellent but he needed help from a grown up to get a decent sound.

I get mistaken for mold all the time. I think it's a mental defense mechanism. Some things can't be unseen, you know.
