My music video using only Sonar 5

The Dream Song

 The Dream Song

The Story Of The Song

Way back when I was using Sonar 5 I wanted to learn more about making videos. So one night I had a dream. In this dream I was with a band back stage and the arena was packed. I could hear the unsettled crowd backstage as the people were waiting for the concert to begin.

Nothing was familiar. I did not know anyone in this group, but they all knew me. Someone said time to start and everyone went on stage. They started playing this song. I was still backstage but I could hear everything going on and being played. I began playing the melody/lead part backstage. I could hear excitement in the crowd as people started cheering. I walked out on stage right when the chorus part was being played and the crowed went nuts. I was near the end of the song then I woke up.

My first thought was what a great dream. My second thought was what a great song! I jumped out of bed a ran to the studio in haste. I did not want this dream to leave me without getting that song. I opened up Sonar and recorded the melody very quickly. Then I saved the project and went about my day. I soon forgot all about the dream and the melody as I typically don't remember my dreams.

A few months later I am cleaning out my audio folder and I stumble across and play the audio that I recorded that morning I had the dream. The whole dream came back to me and I remembered everything in one brief instance. So I began to record all the parts. When it came time to record the last part, (the solo part) I decided to film myself playing the solo. Then I would sink it up in sonar after the song was mixed.

The only camera I had belonged to my wife. She filmed me while I played the song. I had no video editing software. All I had was a cheap camera that shot video too. I imported the video and mixed the song. then I exported the song. I was amazed at how much better the audio sounded then the typical you tube video.

Years later I got video cameras and Sony Vegas. I imported the video from the archives and stuck an intro and ending credits on it. Then I uploaded it.

So check out the dream song using Only Sonar 5 and made years ago. It is the only song I have ever written in my Sleep.

Marcus, this is fantastic!  It's a pleasure to see you play, and I enjoyed this video very much.  When S5 came out, I thought that it was the best version ever, and that I'd never need another DAW.  It was rock solid, and I recorded the better part of 2 CDs on it.  You made good use of yours.  Keep them coming!

This was really good :-) I would say, less jeans, and more spandex... And while you are technically "very good?" When you're on the video like this? :-) You need to move around! Smile at the camera! Dance! Even if you're just playing to the recording and dubbing it?  That Les Paul sounds great man.

"Way back when I was using Sonar 5 I wanted to learn more about making videos." I wanted to, and tried? But my co-stars would never agree to my terms and conditions... :-( WAIT!? Are we talking about the same thing?

really good, Marcus!

however, I have to ask - why didn't you just make the dream into the video instead of having people read about it in the video?

Lynn I felt the same way about S5 I skipped over a version and upgraded to Sonar 7. I did not think it was as good as 5. Then Sonar 8 came out and that was the best version for that time. That was right before Roland took over. So I have been upgrading on a regular basis since that version. Thanks for taking the time to watch my very first video.

The Band19 This was the first time I made a video by recording the sound separately  then syncing it to the video. and using Sonar to do it was a great way to learn. Today I use Sony Vegas and Sonar together. Back then i was more focused on the project then the look. But you have a valid point. My guitar lesson videos are much better. I did not have co-stars and something tells me we are not talking about the same thing,...but maybe the same process. Thanks for taking the time to listen.

Beagle I think the main reason was budget constraints. Although.... that is a good idea. Thank you for watching.

Guitartrek Thank you for taking the time to watch the video and to comment on it.

Marcus, sounds really good. Like the tone of the guitar. Nice playing. At first I thought the lead might come up some but as I listened it was fine. I agree about the text intro. Too long. Might lose some viewers with that. Everyone is so restless.

I am immensely impressed with your handling of the guitar especially the flashorets that you seems to find everywhere on the neck - just awesome. Dream on ;-)

I wish I had videos of me when I was a young rocker... even I wouldn't recognize me.

Cool stuff, nice track to riff on, fun!  Of course I like anything.... guitar.
