Been working on this one for a while and just got the drums completed tonight.   The vocals are really challenging on this song.    We did those on a Mojave tube mic, through a tube preamp.    The guitar is a '56 Gretsch 6120 through a Vox AC30.   The bass is a Hofner clone (Turser).   Piano was done through a M1.    The organ was Dimension Pro, Vox 1.    The drums I did through SD3.

One of my all time favorite Beatle tracks, Lennon's vocal on this is stellar.  Your vocal is excellent, the mix is really nice.  The midi instruments let the overall sound down a little, though.  The drums are a little thin.  What version of Sonar are you using, if you have the full version, use session drummer three and rings beat kit, which I believe is a Ludwig kit, try detuneing it slighty too.  Ringo was fond of detunueing his kit to get an almost orchestral sound.

I actually went to a lot of trouble trying all the different drum kits I have in SD3.   I have the 2009 Remaster of the song loaded as the guide track and could A/B all the different SD3 kits to the Remaster original.    This one was the closest to my ears, can't remember off the top of my head which kit it is, since I listened to all of them.   I tuned the snare a bit to get it really close to the snap that the original has.     I think some of the difference is, I'm listening to it from my source in full bits at 48kHz, with no compression from being converted to mp3 on Adam monitors and Denon AH-D5000 headphones.    I still need to do a few more passes at it cleaning up timing a bit since the drums and shaker were done "freehand" with the guide track as a reference.   I also need to scrutiize the velocity on some of the snare hits in the drum fills that I have now, to what Ringo did, to get closer to his "feel".

Dave, I love it that you do all these Beatles cover songs.  This is no exception.  The more you do, the better you get.

This is pretty good but it sounds a bit dry..... but the Beatles version may have been dry too.... I haven't heard it in a while.   I would add a touch of reverb.... just a touch...

I'm hearing a bit of a timing glitch in a few places kinda like the drummer stumbles a bit. :22, :28, :54, :59 maybe it's just my ears.... but something sounds off at those points.... (I only listed those 4) 

Depending on how smooth you want to make this..... I would run melodyne or some other pitch correction on the BGV. They are pretty good "as is" but line those vocals up to the pitch exactly and they will sound amazing. The Beatles would spend hours, and sometimes days just trying to nail their vocal takes. They did double tracking and I heard that Paul in particular would spend days on the vocal track just to get it precisely synced and in tune.... they didn't have digital autotune plugs back then.... so it was all a matter of you gotta get it right. 

Loved the tune... the crits are minor issues. 

Lynn & Herb, thank you for your kind words and help!   My collaborative friend and I have an enormous respect for what the Beatles created and recreating these songs, is just so very instructive.

I'm in the middle of taking another pass at the timing on the midi drums.   I found a few little things and that's all it takes to knock somehing off a bit.   The other thing I'm adjusting is some of the velocity settings for the snare fills to get the overall feel better.

I am using Perfect Space reverb on all the vocals, the shaker and the drums but I am using it fairly lightly, so it doesn't muddy things up.    The guitar is dry, as is the bass and organ.

I'll post up the revised version when it's ready.

It's good to know that at least some folks here don't mind listening to this 47 year old song.  ;-)

I almost always use the cakewalk Studioverb II on my master buss.  I use the dark plate preset and turn the level to about 10 to 15 just to blend things a bit.... I leave all the other settings in it on default. It's my fav reverb... don't tell anybody...

I do keep many of my tracks totally dry so it needs something to blend it but I don't want a verb in very track. 

I turn the verb up till I can hear it then back it down to where I can't and that's about the right area for a subtle blending with the verb. It just knocks off the rough edges. 

Fixed some timing issues, EQ'ed more, mixed some more, melodyned vox tracks, added some 'verb, fattened the drums and a whole lot more....    See if I'm on the right track now.
