Yep, it's true.
They replaced him with his exact double, who immediately learned to play bass left handed, sang exactly the same, and wrote songs in the same style. Brilliant really.
I really feel I need to chime in here. In all actuality the "real" Paul couldn't do any of those things and their shows were really starting to flop almost immediately so they had to replace him with a stunt double who could. Desperate measures required desperate times, or some such drivel like that.
He never really "died" literally, just in a matter of speaking since the adoring public would never ever actually see him on stage again. Ever.... as in.... for the rest of his live-long-days, would he ever see the light of stage again. Some mistook this to mean "the light of day"... but he
has seen that a time or two, if only two, as he spent most of the 60s and some of the 70s in a Mexican prison without any contact with the outside world, or the inside one for that matter... so I guess he might as well have been dead, or at least wished he was during the whole ordeal.
It wasn't until Davey Jones launched a massive campaign to find him did the world finally find out about the plot. Most of this is still classified by the "Blockade to the Freedom For Information Act", so I really can't divulge any more details than that. In fact, I may have divulged too much already..... (pauses to buy plane ticket and phony passport to Russia).
