Jordan Rudess: Alchemy 2 for Mac is the best synth I've ever used?
Puzzled Punter: It's not out yet!
Jordan Rudess: I'm just practising my lines.

Just spoke to the head camel man on Skype. My user name is SonnyDelight. His is PensionSorted.
I asked why was he doing this to me?

Your existing Alchemy will continue to work, right up until it doesn't. When that happens it'll be Microsoft's fault, not Apple's.

Of course, you'll not be able to buy any expansion libraries for it, because Apple doesn't allow such practices. Just try to buy a $3 generic charger cable for your iPhone...doesn't exist, because the connector is patented and Apple thinks it's entirely reasonable to charge $20 for a foot-long cable.

Logic users should not feel too smug about this. Apple could very well decide to abandon the product entirely - it wouldn't be the first time.

Alchemy never moved from my wish-list to my buy-immediately list, so I'm not out anything. But it makes you wonder what other mom 'n pop software companies Apple's gonna gobble up next.

I can't think of a single example of where a big company buying a small company has ultimately been good for consumers. Can you?

For anyone already working on Mac, the acquisition of eMagic/Logic must have been a blessing - price is now 1/5th of what it was, and the integration with the OS is unrivalled, not to mention the resources available for development - Apple doesn't need to rely on licensing from 3rd party to bundle top notch plug-ins, synths and content.

Plus, the technology gave birth to GarageBand, which is free for anyone who buys a Mac.

So, it does suck but only for some consumers

Acquisition has replaced creativity as the best way to enhance your business. Why build it when you can buy it? Unfortunately those that are acquired don't usually fare well, particularly when the acquisition is simply the cheapest way to eliminate the competition. Buy them, kill them, increase market share, move on to the next.

That's one thing I can't understand, because Apple has a great team of developers, and Alchemy was not exactly competing with them. Buying them out to shut them down doesn't seem to make sense - though of course, they could do just that - like Gibson did a few years ago when they bought Opcode.

Or maybe they saw the potential in it.

To be perfectly honest, I think it would have made more sense if Cakewalk\Gibson acquired Camel.

Odd acquisition. So much for alchemy 2 for non-mac users.

Mmmm ... happy Mac user here. MainStage's great. Logic too. And Logic Remote. GarageBand isn't kids' stuff anymore. And they even incorporated Redmatica for sampling your outboard synths.

Right.  Everyone that uses Alchemy on Windows is screwed.  Apple did the same thing to me with Logic for Windows.
