  • The piano roll and placed note make sounds; playing doesn't

Hi.
I'm using Sonar Producer 6 64bit on a Windows 8.1 machine.
I've got a pile of soundfonts and TX16WX to load them with.

I've tried using other soundfont VSTs/DXIs and the results are the same.  (the subject literally says it all)

I'm not sure what would cause the settings to be so right that I can hear the sound when the piano keys are pressed.
Hear the note when its placed.

....but hear nothing when the meter collides with the note / when its played.

MIDI works perfectly - its just that I'm stuck on the last hurdle with these soundfonts.
Can anyone help please?  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

The only thing I can think of is that when editing the track, the VST is responding in OMNI mode, but the track playback is sending out note-ON messages on a specific MIDI channel that the VST isn't set to.

Can you successfully edit/playback MIDI tracks using a different VST? Is it unique to this VST? Does the VST have a "respond on channel X" setting?

I cannot successfully playback using a different VST.  I have the same issue with sforzando.  (another soundfont VST)
I hear the key press.  I hear the note dropped.
...but it will not play.

You saying "Omni" triggered me something to try.  (there's an omni MIDI channel setting in TX16WX)
...but that didn't work.

Ok, this is strange.
The note(s) I have placed start at "3".
I can get them to play when the marker starts at "3"
...but NOT if I start the marker at "2" or "1" or the beginning.

So it DOES play - but unless I start playing with the note, the notes don't "catch" when the meter goes by.

What is going on?

I've noticed problems in previous versions of SONAR when trying to trigger MIDI events at 1:00:00 - this is one reason why I always start my projects at bar 3 (it's a pain).

I'm not saying this is your problem, because starting at bar 2 should work in that case.
If you put your MIDI note event at bar 2, but start the playback from 1:00, does the note sound?

Same thing - there's nothing significant with starting at "3".
The sound(font) only plays where the meter starts and never again while its running.

I just did a test and even though the sonar playback doesn't work practically, it exports just fine.  (the WAV has the full sound)

Rather than devote any more time chasing this ghost, I'll just sequence everything using a TTS track (which DOES play realtime) and when it comes time to export, I'll copy everything to the soundfont track and mute the MIDI.

If anyone has a fix, I'd still like to know it.
In the meantime, at least I can work around broken.

Thanks for your help.

Was there some sort of 'count in' problem/bug/setting with the metronome settings on older versions?

I'm sure the metronome did affect certain playback just by being on.
