NHL ?

The best hockey is highschool and college.

I was thinking more of the Canadiens de Montreal Club. :P

IMO, the best hockey is the one you can play instead of watching. But that's a thing of the past for me.

The next best thing is also a thing of the past - NHL hockey before the late 80s. By the 90s, it was all about money and merchandising and had lost all its interest.

I can't help but think of guys like Maurice Richard and Jacques Plante when I see one of those multi-millionaire 20 years old who refuse to play because they broke a fingernail or something - for all of their paddings and protection...

I'm guessing that high school and college is much better. Actually, I think one of my wife's cousin is a pretty prominent player in college league back home.

One cool thing about hockey is that every time I meet and/or have to make conversation with someone from Russia, we have that one thing to fall back on. Just mention you're from Canada and it's one of the first thing they'll say - hockey! I "made friends" with a bunch of drunk guys at the supermarket in Moscow because of that. lol

Rain, do they have many rinks in Las Vegas? I know that sounds like a silly question, but there are quite few in Dallas and pretty good youth programs. I was certified and coached highschool for several years. If you ever have a son, you will have to get him into hockey and go into coaching. It is something that us guys who are now to old to play and compete, can do to give back to the sport. Being from Canada, you will have instantaneous cred on any rink in Las Vegas. 😄

I haven't investigated that yet. I'm guessing there has to be a few.

But indeed, if I have a son, he'll be exposed to hockey - even it's just in the driveway.

Funnily enough, I was on FB earlier and saw that my father-in-law had posted a pic of their big external rink and was anxious to finally get back to hockey. He and my brother-in-law play pretty much every weekend.

There's rumours of an NHL club expansion in Vegas. Nobody knows if it will work, but they're talking about it.

What would they call the team? The Blackjacks?

Yeah, I've heard about that vaguely.

Man, that would piss my friends from Quebec City and all the old Quebec Nordiques fans if we got a team before them. They never got over it. A few years ago they actually had a march to bring back the Nordiques. 50 000 people showed up.

As of right now, they're building a new amphitheatre for the NHL hockey team - I have friends posting pictures every few weeks. They don't have a team yet, or any guarantee they'll ever have one, but, hey, why let that bother you...

That gives Canadiens' fans an opportunity to poke them. :P

Could not not post this as a follow up... The family in Quebec sent us a bunch of gifts, including - a Quebec Nordiques jersey.

Here's me sporting them old rival's colours, just for the sake of it. :P

I really must get myself the right jersey next time.

Welcome to Vegas - it's almost all white and shades of eggshell around here. Which is a pretty bad idea when it comes to rugs...
