We all laughed at karaoke when we first heard about it in the early 70's, but today it's ubiquitous. The Japanese have long been ahead of the pop culture curve in many ways. I think it has to do with their propensity to all go nuts en-masse over every new trend.

If you think this is bizarre, check this out. Or this one, with audience participation!

I'm not much of a fan of pop, so there's not much difference where it comes from to me.

However, I'm a big fan of traditional Chinese and Japanese music. For a while, it was the only thing I listened, as I felt the need to get immersed into something entirely different, to re-learn everything.

A Japanese band called Loudness also made quite an impression on my friends and I when we were teenagers. Akira Takazaki quickly became a revered figure for us.

Loudness was great.

This is also a song I like. The diversity of the arrangement is good I think.

My daughter is a big fan of K-pop and has given me a taste. I have to admit that some of it is pretty good, although some of it is pretty bad. Cat coffee houses and little girls dressed as French maids don't work for me though.
