Well, some of it may just be code compatibility issues. I don't use any of those editors (Sony Soundforge 11 is what I use) but could be 8 just doesn't like them. 99.99% of older software runs fine, but I've seen stuff that doesn't.
The rest, sounds like either a driver or hardware issue. By driver I don't necessarily mean for that device, but another driver (maybe motherboard driver) causing issues with the system. 8 itself has no inherent issues with networking we have deployed about 250 copies at work and have not seen any issues with slowness in network.
If you've a rather old system, like something that originally ran XP but has been upgraded to 8.1, that might be it. Manufacturers stop supporting old hardware after a time an maybe something in there lacks proper drivers.
Also could be a hardware fault. Doesn't necessarily sound like it, but I wouldn't rule it out without testing.
Even if it is newer, could be some really weird incompatibility. I had that on my laptop. Upgraded it to 8.1, worked great for months. Then suddenly very strange issues. they coincided with a WiFi upgrade but turned out not to be it, the old hardware did the same thing. Reinstalls didn't help, though it worked initially once all drivers were loaded problems happened. I got tired of it and said "the hell with it" and stuck 7 back on. Problem may be fixed for all I know but I don't use my laptop a ton so it stays on 7.
