Well, Beck IS the greatest guitarist ever, living or dead; that's indisputable.

That's fightin' talk...

Yar whar's the Hendrix love?

We should all know by now, there isn't a 'greatest' or 'best'...just your favourite. Clapton, Page, Beck and Hendrix don't even get in my Top 20.

Top 40?

Err...no...

I've never been into Beck and Clapton that much, and Page is my favorite musician, ever - but I wouldn't necessarily think he's the greatest guitarist of them all.

Though I'm a guitar player, I realize that I mostly don't care for "best guitar player" type of things. I have a bunch of favorite players, and they may happen to be technically great, but that's not a criteria.

Attitude and taking chances are two qualities I associate Page with, and I think I remember reading an interview with Van Halen in which he mentioned that even though he'd studied Clapton note for note, Page's attitude and sense of fun had tremendously influenced him.

My list of classic English guitar players would probably start w/ Page and Gilmour. Mick Ronson would also be there. Adrian Smith. Soulful players.

I love Page's playing too. Especially when he's noodling in the Dorian mode a la the live version of No Quarter. Since I've Been Loving You was also a great influence when I first picked up a guitar. Tea For One has some awesome Page playing as well.

He obviously has great charisma and presence which has done very well for him in his career. Back before he was famous he used to date a friend of my mothers and she said if Jimmy picked up a guitar at a party, the music would get turned off and he'd have a room full of adoring females sat cross legged around him in a circle gazing at him longingly. I guess Plant had the same quality with the ladies. From what I understand they made complete pigs of themselves with the groupies ;)

'Plant soundalike David Coverdale'

Hmm. Never heard much similarity myself.

Should read "Plant Lookalike David Coverdale." The similarity was visual, not aural.
