I gave ten bucks to a Kickstarter campaign to help finance a prog rock album, the first time I've participated in anything like that. In return I'll get the album (MP3 + FLAC) when it's released sometime in October.

The album is by Dave Kerzner, whom you may know as Squids, founder of Sonic Reality and creator of many of the libraries in SampleTank 2.

From what little I've heard of the album, it sounds like it'll be quite enjoyable. It's epic prog in the grand tradition, with all the elements you expect from good classic prog: dynamic arrangements, strong melodies and virtuoso leads.

Find a short pitch video and some musical teasers here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/davekerzner/new-world-a-progressive-rock-album-by-dave-kerzner

Must admit I wasn't even aware of Kickstarter until I got there recently via a link from Marillion's guitarist Steve Rothery, who used it to finance his new solo record. Great idea though.

He he.  Same thing here.  Ten bucks for a high-quality-format download of an album I'd probably be curious enough to purchase anyway seems like a win-win: be a patron of the arts and get your kicks in the bargain.  Of course, this sort of pitch could turn into a regular thing and become deeply annoying if it becomes prevalent.

The idea is pretty good. I contributed to the Kickstarter campaign for finishing "The Wrecking Crew" movie. Should be a great documentary and is nearing its completion. As a supporter I will get a copy of the DVD. Projects like this apparently run into a lot of financial obstacles when it comes to copyright and publishing rights. This seemed like a worthwhile project, and am personally excited about its release.

I think the 4 trillion number is the goal. Actual funds raised are probably 50 bucks. But wouldn't that be cool - Jon Stewart calling the shots at CNN? I'd get rid of that Blitzer fellow first.

This looks pretty intresting. I'm in.

Quite a list of participants, Steve Hackett, Heather Findley, a couple members of Big Big Train, some of my favourite artists.

I wonder how much money ALL fund raising websites, worldwide, for all of history have raised...  I wonder if the total is really even a billion dollars yet (let alone 4,000 times that amount for one ridiculous cause).

Most people have very little concept of scale.  For example, if you make $1,500 an hour, every hour, then it would take about four weeks to earn a million dollars (just under 28 days).  However, if you continued earning at that same rate, it would take you over 76 years(!) to earn a billion dollars.  This should give you some idea of what Bill Gates accomplished when he topped the 100 billion dollar mark in personal worth back in 1999!

Oh yeah, if you wanted that four trillion dollars?  You'd have to raise $1,500 an hour, every hour, for over 76 THOUSAND years!  Now consider that the U.S. debt is around $17.6 trillion and your head will probably hurt.

Sounds like a TV show legend. A search at Kickstarter.com only shows a 'Jon Stewart 4 President' project. Had 3 supporters for a whopping total of $130.00. Project was cancelled back on 04/18/2012.
