I cannot re-install Adobe Audition on my new DAW, because it wants to connect to a now-nonexistent authentication server.

Just an FYI You can download a version AA3 from Adobe that doesn't use the authentication server for free.

That's my understanding. However, I've made three failed attempts to download that "freed" version. (BTW, why on earth is an audio editor 4.5 gigabytes in size anyway???)

It wouldn't be so bad if there was anything else out there (that's not rented from Adobe) with a comparable feature set to AA3. Oh sure, there's Sound Forge. But I'm still boycotting Sony for distributing malware.

UPDATE: This conversation prompted me to give Adobe one more shot, and to my surprise and delight, I now have AA3 back in my arsenal. Woo hoo! Turned out only 353 MB of that 4.5 GB was actually needed. The rest was apparently some loop library I'd never used. I might even give Waves another shot now...um, on second thought, nah.

OEM copies of CS5.5 and CS6 are still available in places. I used CS5.5 which is AA4 (was rewritten with no MIDI support).

Considering what happened w/ René and RGC, I wouldn't be too excited if Gibson/Cakewalk had acquired them. Rapture and Dimension both had the potential to develop into something like Alchemy...

During the period between Cakewalk acquiring RGC and Roland acquiring Cakewalk, there were a few things happening.  DP, Rapture, P5...  During the Roland years the biggest new softsynth was Beatscape.

I'm not sure what direction Gibson is going.  After a year of owning Cakewalk they haven't really shown signs of having grand plans.  Maybe during NAMM more will be revealed.

Ah, the golden age of Cakewalk for me... :)

Despite my apprehensions, somehow, it would kind of make sense if Cakewalk acquired Alchemy, maybe even more so because they (seem to) have given up on developing DP and Rapture, and Alchemy is an evolution of the technology behind those.

And in the end, if Cakewalk sells a product I can use, I'm always happy to indulge.

They also didn't release anything during the forth quarter, so it's definitely not business as usual...

Had an appalling vision last night.  Apple turns out to be the new owner of Alchemy.  Now we will have to use iTunes to load new content into the synth.

Even worse is that if Apple takes it over that will certainly spell the end of PC versions for newer releases of the synth and its sound libraries.  Remember Logic 5.5. After I had spent over $2500 on Logic all following versions were MAC only.  I was not happy as were many others at the time.

What I do these days is if I build a new PC I keep the old one  (completely intact)  and integrate it into the system and treat it like a musical instrument.  All you need to do is to link it via midi and audio and you can keep using all your previous versions of everything for many years after.  I have two computers operating this way in conjunction with my main machine.  They also spread the load around and can do things while your main machine is doing other things etc..

Brilliant.

Or it's Microsoft that's the new owner; there will now be daily updates automatically downloaded to fix the bugs introduced in yesterday's automatic update. The good news is it'll be DirectX and compatible with XBox360.

Worse scenario: IKM is the new owner; Alchemy 2 will be pushed back to 2019 so they can get the iOS version ready by Christmas.

Even worse scenario: Waves is the new owner; Alchemy now runs in a proprietary shell that randomly falls over and demands re-authorization unless you've paid protection money. Alchemy 2 and Alchemy 1 cannot be installed on the same computer.

Worse worse scenario: Steinberg is the new owner; they'll be skipping Alchemy 2 and going straight to Alchemy 3, which will only run in Cubase until every other DAW vendor has rewritten their respective applications.
