My granddaughter is the only student in her guitar class who can tune the instrument by ear. I have an extra electronic tuner I could give her, but I think she should cultivate that skill. Someday it could be a rare and marketable talent, like singers who can wing it without autotuning.
Of course, I'm not one to talk. As a keyboard player my #1 measure of a guitar's quality is its ability to stay in tune. Nothing kills the moment like having to stop everything to tune up. Except maybe the drummer's girlfriend showing up with an axe, be it figurative or literal.
