Hey All!
Ok.. so I know that this is way OVERDONE.. in music videos, etc, etc.  And I'm sure we've all seen it,.. where the sliders on a control surface are programed to slide up and down in a wave-like pattern (on repeat).  I've seen it and never thought twice about it, until today I sat down to create a session with dummy tracks to mimic that effect.
 
And.. uh... well, I just couldn't get it to roll through smoothly.  Eight tracks, each nudged over to the right on the timeline by a fraction, so on and so forth, but upon hitting the loop/repeat mark, some of the sliders hop or jump as opposed to a smooth, seamless transition. (I also never noticed how loud the V700C is when all the sliders are moving continually, ha!)
 
Now the OCD part of me must know how to get this done properly.

It's obviously not life or death, but I'd like to be able to know where I went wrong.  Visually, the automation lanes look good, and I took my time, but something is clearly wrong.
 
So I scoured the interwebs looking for a dummy midi file I could load into Sonar X2 to play with and decipher.  I couldn't find one.

Does anyone know where I could find such a session to load into Sonar to see the wavey slider effect?  I am curious to know how it is created and how to ensure a seamless transition once the current time marker hits the loop point.

if you really want to waste time on this, why not take the draw tool and draw some sine wave automation curves, shouldn't take more than a minute to do this

Thanks for the reply, FreeFlyBertl... even if it was slightly condescending.

I don't consider something a waste of time if I am able to learn something, even if that something happens to be something basic to someone else.

That being said, your suggestion is exactly what I described as doing in the take lanes.  The issue is on the part of the loop back, I don't have a seamless transition.  Most of the sliders jump or hop.  It is an exact sort of thing.. and I'm wondering how best to create seamless loop.

feeling a bit guilty for sounding condescending i went ahead and created a project for you. actually, it took more than a minute because of some Sonar peculiarities (i.e. to draw nice sine automation you need to do it on pan and then reassign to level, then clone to 8 tracks and nudge ... and of course, I had a crash as I forget that bug that nudging crashes X2a) ...
 
so the sliders are dancing. no jumping at the end of the loop (if sine wav automation matches measures / loop length)
 
now I only need to figure out a way to get that file to you ...

pls rename the file "Dancing Faders.cwp.txt" to "Dancing Faders.cwp" and give it a try. it would only allow me to send with a different extension

I got your PM.. thanks a million!!  It works flawlessly.  Couple things I wasn't doing, that I noticed you did... first was that your loop beginning point wasn't exactly on frame #1 but rather towards the middle of the timeline.  Brilliant.. that certainly helps in getting the seamless transition.

Secondly, my automation lanes looked more like "V"s and "W"s rather than an actual wave like yours.  Your file played a million times more smoothly.

Could you please enlighten me as to how you got such a perfect wave form on even just the first track?  I'm a tad bit old school and I'm usually dragging the faders in a session manually and recording the automation, then I'll tweak it later.  So I have no idea how you made such nice wave form.
 
I tried to follow what you were saying about doing it in "pan" first and then reassign the take lane to "level".  But in pan mode, did you do that manually or is there some other feature I'm missing?

well, where you start doesn't really matter. just out of habit I leave a couple of measures before I start tracking.
what's important, though, is to set your loop points in such a way that the automation envelope at start and end of the loop is exactly at the same level (otherwise faders jump). the only save way to do this is by drawing rather than recording fader movements, using a sine or tringular wav draw shape with snap settings set to measures.

like you i always record the automation, hardly every draw, and never needed that sine draw feature until your question came up.
 
to draw this: open an automation take lane for "Pan". hit F9 until the icon shows a sine icon. set snap to measures and drag from left to right on the automation lane. perfect sine shaped automation appears. now left click the automation envelop and reassign the envelop to "Volume". Done.
 
never needed that feature in real life, though. the only applicability I see is if you'd what to set up some sort of auto-panner effect ...
