updated mix 10-3

original mix:

a Spacey acoustic/electric ode to moonshine, and it's after effects.
:)

i just finished putting my studio room together in the new old house i just moved into....
and this is my first project in there, with new monitor setup and all, i've got a completely new acoustic environment i'm going to have to learn to mix in.

this is a new version of this song, with added bass track and new mix from scratch.

this is the 1st song i used my new KSM44 to track with.

this features a Taylor 414 full sized grand auditorium, and a Seagull Artist Mosiac, mixed together,
along with a custom build USACG stratocaster doing the electric work thru an old mesa boogie head.
Bass is a Carvin LB70, thru a sansamp bass di, mic pre and compressor.

it is mixed for a softer sound, and is not mastered hot, so CRANK it up.
it wants to be loud, it really does.

how does the low end translate on your system?
this is what i'm working on with this one.
i want the low end to be full, but not boomy.

This sounds awesome, as do most all of your productions... maybe too awesome... to me, the subject matter calls for an bluesier, earthy, organic vibe... The bass sounds very good in my studio and in the house... The vocals, have your unique, trademark sound, but seem to me, maybe a little overproduced for the song... electric guitars may also be a little busy here & there... acoustic guitars are great... as always, steller performances... I'll check back later... great work...

The mix sounds excellent to my ears, I'm listening on my k240's which I trust.  The bass sounds great.  I've got the KSM27 - love the KSM series mics.  The acoustic guitars are recorded beautifully - as is everything else.

Thanks for listening, yeah, ole popcorn sutton, was definitely an influence for this song.

let me know how it sounds on your big system as soon as you can listen there......

wookie
appreciate the review.
soft attack on bass......
i did play this with my fingers, and there are sections where i'm very mellow with the attack...
there is limiting and compression on the bass (i always track bass thru a dbx compressor, then i add limiting at the bass bus level, but the attack is usually backed off, with only about a 5 ms release..)
i want the bass to fill out the bottom of the acoustics, and not necessarily add percussion.

guitarhacker...
thank you for chiming in on this....

i'm not too concerned with playback issues on computer speakers....
i'm really gearing my mixes for full playback systems, and decent ear buds.

the PC speakers almost never sound very good. surely not good enough to tell how something is translating,
i listen to pro stuff on my little computer speakers at work sometimes, and it's all over the map with translation.

but it's good to know i'm in the ballpark there.
honestly, i don't want folks to listen to my stuff on a little desktop speaker...
i want them to take it home and CRANK IT THE PHUCK UP!!!

LOL

thanks again.....
