Batsbrew is pretty much right. A Starved plate design is not a real tube pre. It's really an effect. If you want to hear the difference, borrow a Summit 2BA-221 or a UA-710 from someone and compare that to the starved plate design. You'll see they're more inline with what's sought after for tube pre's on a budget. The Tube pre's will have better definition and warmth in ways that make instruments and vocals sound better, not distort them to the point the imaging is shallow and smeared. I have two of the starved plate designs. They're good if you are not critical of the tube-y ness, but for a real depth and 3D image, they simply don't offer that.
