I've heard people mention things going wrong after a Windows update but in 25 years I'd never had it happen to me.
 
That changed two days ago when I notice the Snipping Tool, which I use a lot for my studies, no longer worked on two completely different systems in my house.
 
There was a bad update this week that affected a bunch of things, so if you've experienced something odd, or something that no longer works, this may be the cause.  See Update KB3004394 breaks Root Certificate in Windows... for more details.
 
Microsoft just released an update that removes the bad update and my systems appear to have fixed themselves and are back to normal.  So you shouldn't have to do anything.
 
I wasted a few hours with this one.  Imagine how many systems were affected around the world.  Guess some tech guys at Microsoft didn't get much sleep these last couple of days.
 

It's certainly not the first time an automatic update has done damage. It's actually a pretty common occurrence. Fortunately, it'll typically be something obscure that not everybody experiences. Remember when a Windows update forced everybody's 800 MB/s Firewire interfaces to 400 MB/s? Only users with Firewire-connected external disk drives noticed.
 
At least with Microsoft if they break something you just need to wait until tomorrow and it'll probably be OK again.
 
Personally, I don't do daily (or hourly) Windows updates. I just run the updater once a month. There's no guarantee MS won't have fcked something up in the last update, but at least the prior four weeks' mistakes will have already been addressed.

I don't think they really update anything other than screw ups and virus updates more than once a month anymore.
 
You get a lot of updates on the 2nd (I think) Tuesday of each month.

If my snipping tool was screwed I didn't notice, and it's OK now. I guess I've been lucking with automatic Windows updates so far.
