The 90s Box Sets remasters were absolutely fine and took care of the issue - which was that the catalog had not been properly mastered for CD.

Once that out of the way, admitting that Page himself supervised the original remaster series, my impression is that anything they do from there on would be intrusive and detrimental to the music, and would probably also compromise the dynamic range.

Agreed.

The extra material I'd be curious to hear obviously. Though oddly enough, I remember Page saying that that was it and that there was no material left unreleased... That was back in the 90s.

I think he was saying that there were no other unreleased studio tracks besides the two on the box sets.

But obviously they released a fair amount of live stuff since then.

I'd think there was more live material, but whether Page would want to release it is another question. Also I'm not sure how much was kept after all those tour recordings were stolen from him and released as boots back in the '70's.

there is a whole backstory to the NEW re-mastering.

you can google it.....

but this is page remastering the entire catelog in high def (rolling stone did interviews)

page:
"The catalog was last remastered 20 years ago," he said. "That's a long time. Everything is being transferred from analog to a higher-resolution digital format. That's one of the problems with the Zeppelin stuff. It sounds ridiculous on MP3. You can't hear what's there properly."

He also remastered stuff for Mothership just a few years back.

After all the compression I think it clocked in somewheres between 11 and 12 bit resolution. Really.

it's good.

companion disc, meh, who cares.

they made the right decision about re-mixing at the time.
the end product, was perfect.

excellent remaster.

they took a 'dark' original mix, and without adding sheen and treble, they made it more 'clear'.

this is what mastering is really all about.
