Here is another track that I have finished recently. I asked my mate, who has a knack for lyrics, to write me out something and see what we could come up with. This is the result, a lamenting pop track with an acoustic touch. Titled "Lost For You", please take a listen and let me know how it sits with you.

Cian, this is my favorite song from you, yet!  You put your voice to good use on this number; it's as strong and emotional as I've heard it.  The lyrics are very good, as well.  There's plenty of breathing room in this, and every element has it's own space.  That being said, it was a little left channel heavy on my monitors and VU meters.  I also like the tone of the piano in the verse, but not as much on the chorus, however, that is just my ears.  The part is terrific.  Again, this is a very good song that is a tweak from Nirvana.

Vocal sounds great, especially chorus - piano tone could be better - just lacks a little depth for me.

very very much a gem of a song. you have a great vocal range and hit that falsetto in the chorus w/ amazing power and feeling.
impressed.  kinda song you want your girlfriend to listen to after a fight.

your friend's lyrics are very poetic, almost John Keats-ish with lines like

"beauty's brail and sweetest sail,
cast into the eye's of the soundless gale"

well done on all points, mate.  bet not too many folks on this side of the pond know that meaning of 'brail' save nautical folks

I would have like a deep grand piano on this.  Nicely done.  Nicely sang.  A really good song.  The bell on the big chorus seemed a little too up front to me, but I like them.  Like the piano though I seem to feel like I want them a little brighter.  Not much to crit.  Nice job.

The lyrics are really beautiful. Very nice song. Echo the comments on the piano. Around 3:54 when you start the outro, the piano entrance seems a bit off. Maybe check the timing at that spot?

Cian,

Great vox.  Slight suggestions:

  1. Perhaps introduce other instruments earlier (one by one) to move the song along.  It's a little long w/o movement, by today's standards.
  2. Use another piano patch or don't eq out the bottom of the piano so much.  You aren't using a bassline so this will fill in the bottom.
  3. It screams for a bassline and at least a snare hit or clap with your percussion.  Again, this will move it along.

These are just my opinions on what already is a good song.  Whether you use some of them or not, well done.

Cian, I just listened to this beautiful song several more times, and I had a thought (as painful as that may be).  Regarding the piano, why not use an electric piano?  A Rhodes or Wurlitzer sample would work, just with a different flavor.  Regardless, this is real gem.
