For the price and as I tend to like all things Klanghelm I have bought in and been doing some testing. It is one very smooth and nice sounding plugin and so far I have been using it in Desk Mode and in mastering mode. It sounds very nice and is capable of some variations in how masters can sound.
The compressor works well when used subtly, the EQ's are handy for final tweaking. Tweaking transient quality, drive, number of stages and crosstalk is also rather interesting and adds quite a lot adjustment to the sound.
In some of the other modes it reminds me of an old Tascam 70's 8 channel mixer I have and sometimes run stems through in a mixdown. It has got a real retro 70's sound and the EQ circuits are passive using actual inductors and capacitors to form the filters followed by some classic 70's gain. This thing has got real color and can add a real sound to any stem. It has nice EQ on the channels too. I have to patch it of course if I want to use it and more often than not I tend to try and get the sound with a plugin instead. Many have failed but this sounds like it can do that job very easily and not only that but offer much more variation in what it is actually doing and sounding like.
It can sound quite sweet and reminds me of Harrison Mixbus type of sound. Might be able to replace parts of that now for me within Studio One like on buses etc.. Although Mixbus offers a lot in terms of EQ especially. It does sound nice. This plugin can show up inside Mixbus of course.
I will need time to explore the other options but it looks and feels very useful. All the controls within the GUI operate slowly and smoothly which is a delight. The IN/OUT meter mode is also very clever and useful for getting the perfect level match in and out of this plugin. I can see this becoming part of my mastering chain now.
Klanghelm plugins are all rather excellent in quality of operation and sound usually. I have found many uses even for that free compressor. I think their flagship compressor might be worth a look into as well. Their VU meters are excellent and still are the closest ballistics wise to the real VU's. I have got 3 or 4 VU plugins now and the Klanghelm meters still dance and feel the best.
Update: The VU meters on the front panel of this plugin (one meter only) are very similar to their VU plugins so the meters are very useful even for just measuring levels. It is good the calibration level can be changed to suit whatever ref level you are working at.
Have been in tube mode and there are some nice sounds to be had there too. Can be pushed hard. Some of the presets are pretty wild and over the top. I am tending to err on the side of less at first and easing in to pushing it harder. It seems to work at both subtle use and being driven. It will be great for just adding some drive and character to a narly guitar stem etc
It is a little CPU intensive so you might want to render tracks or stems that are using it. It is very low latency though
(registers 0.1 ms on my system)
