Very nice, Chuck!  Not only is this an enjoyable song to listen to, but the engineering helps so much to make it that way.  I hope your band appreciates what you've done for them.  The experience you've gained from doing your own songs really pay off here.  Kudos.

Thanks Lynn, My band has been very appreciative. So were these guys too. They plan to return to do the rest of their record and even made a point to name 5 other studios they have been in (much bigger names & places) and said I had the best sound hands down. That was a cool compliment to get. Dialing in my skills more & more everyday. Lately I have been working to really understand compressors & setting them up properly. For instance I love the little extra bite I was able to get on the snare in this track with good comp settings. And using parallel compression helps fatten up the mixes. I blended in a little of that for the drums & then again for the bass on this one. This was recorded, mixed, & rough pseudo mastered in 5 hours. The next day the only tweaks were to raise about 4 syllables in in one spot of vocal & they asked me to add delay to the lead vocal on the chorus. After that.... Done. They are ecstatic with it. Once the whole record is done we will be using Danny D. to master the whole thing properly.

this is great dude. you dialed in things better than the last one i heard.  i actually like the delay on the vox- gives it like this bandshell in front of a large hall feel.  in fact there is nothing to really criticize about the mix. good work! the only thing i might suggest is that the bass could have more feel/presence/strength in the lows and sub-lows - eg a wider/rounder sound down there. it's a tad mid-rangey sounding to my ears- i still like it a lot but i really wanna 'feel' it in my gut. 

song is cool. of course i can make obvious comparison to Sublime. i would also call this more slow ska than reggae, but it's reggae from the fact that the snare hits on the '3'

Nice work, Chuck.  I remember when you first came up here with these band recordings.  You always did good but your chops have come a long way.  This sounds like a really good live performance recording to me.  You captured the spirit of this music and put it out to us.  I like this a bunch, kinda made me move my feet.  i was chair dancin". :-)

Thanks Virus, Yeah it was a tough call on the bass. he's playing what I am fairly certain is a Mexican made fender copy that was very low end heavy and I cut some of it out to allow both the kick to have room to sit & to get more distinction from the bass notes he's playing. Solo'd I can't stand the bass tone alone but it's working within the mix. It might need a little more but that is where I left it. BTW... your avatar is freaking creepy. Warren- Thanks man. I am trying to make sure I am getting the energy of these bands right and doing their live sound some justice, though I do polish it up as needed. I appreciate the compliment!

That is a fun and cool song. Well played and produced. I would add a final compressor or limiter to add more punch to the track.
