  • Desciple - something different from the norm (for me)

I found some old vacation videos and decided to score some music for them.  This is the first song I wrote, an instrumental titled "Desciple".  I've written instrumentals in the past, but not with the modern tools I have today.  Other than Superior Drummer and Jamstix, I stayed in the box with X1, using z3ta-2, Rapture, and Dimension Pro.  Nothing is set in stone, so if you all have suggestions, I'm all ears.  BTW, the ending on this is very abrupt by design, as if it were swallowed by a black hole.  That, too, isn't set in stone, yet.  I want to thank in advance all who take the time to listen to this piece.

I remastered this today (8/9) to reduce the volume of the mp3 file.  Hopefully this will not distort.

This has been remixed today (8/11) to address the "jump cuts" issues and to put a fade on the ending for those who didn't care for the abrupt end.

Great! Composition is great. Those synth sounds are perfect, the reverb and production are great. There seem to be a couple of jump cuts in the last half of the song, like record needle skips. Not sure what those are but other than that it's great all round!

Lynn this was a really nice piece to listen to, especially since I also just upgraded to X1 and I am using out-of-the box tools. You covered a range of synths here in this! My first listen to this hurt my ears, as I had the sound up enough to preview most others' songs on here - how do you get such high compression without clipping? I took in several of your others and they're at the same level. *lol* I'll just remember next time to roll down the gains a tad before previewing one 'a yours! haha Nice job though on the synths and production. I think you should create an actual ending though, rather than the black hole effect! Perhaps a fade-out on a loop of what you have going near the end would be great. Nice work! - John

Moe, thanks for giving this a listen and for you kind comments.  I'm not sure about the "needle skips", but I hope that it's a fault of the server because I don't hear them on my end.

JD, thank you, as well, for taking the time to listen and comment.  Sorry about your ears.  I use Sound Forge to create my master before mp3 conversion, and set my limiter (Ozone) to a -0.1  ceiling.  I find when listening to other submissions that I'm in the middle of the pack as far as volume goes.  I have no idea if that's standard or not, and perhaps others could give me an idea if this is acceptable.  As for the ending, it actually coincides with the video I scored this to, but could easily be faded on the last few measures.

This takes me back to Enigma. I like it but to me it needs vocals.

That was an abrupt ending. I like it!

Well done!!!

@ cclarry and guitarpima, thank you both for having a listen and taking the time to respond.  Having listened to both your songs today, I jazzed to be in such good company.

I like this Lynn, but the mix sounds a bit too hot or else there is too much fizz in the patch.  (I know fizz is not the right word... I'm a guitar player OK )

I like the movement changes.  That bass sounds killer, what did you use?

Hi Lynn , love this one ! The mix could use alittle fine tuning , I'm hearing that fizz type sound too Daryl mentioned .

Nice job, like your choice of synth sounds , keeps your interest high from start to finish .

what an eclectically delicious composition.  almost like if Yes collaborated with Enigma on a movie soundtrack.  this is truly a gem!
