Here is my newest project from my home studio.  The song is "Sorrow", and is written for someone I love who is struggling to find their way in life.

I've mixed feelings about the two instances of delay I use on the chorus. The first one sounds ok to me but the second...???

I am playing all instruments/vocals except drums. The drums are SD using Steve Slate samples
I used Slate VCC, FG-X, Mixbus.
Kush UBK is used on several channels.
Vocal buss is UAD2 EMT 140. Cooper Time Delay
Everything tracked thru ADL600 into Lynx Hilo using V700 for automation and mixing out thru Hilo

Master buss last effect is UAD2 Stereo Limiter
Mix checked with RN Digital Inspector and Voxengo Span.

All comments, suggestions welcome.

I don't know how I missed this fine song, but I'm glad I finally caught up with it.  It has a lot of good things going for it, especially the message.  It sounds huge due to your use of reverb and delay, yet everything can be well heard in the mix.  My only suggestion, and this is jmo, would be to back off the reverb on the lead vocal a bit.  That would bring the vocal closer to the listener and more intimate.  With so much depth from everything else, it would also add some texture and contrast to the mix.  That's just minor in the overall scheme of things.  Bottom line: this is a darn good song, period.

Thank you for the feedback. You are the second person to tell me that the vocal is too wet.  I plan to revisit the mix later this week when I have some time.  There simply is not enough time in the day to do everything I need to do!

Hi, Steve,

Great song!  Really well written and performed, with excellent vocals and nice guitar work.

I agree with Lynn about maybe backing off the reverb on the vocals a bit, and my only other very minor nitpick is that the "bell" sound of the intro cymbal that carries throughout the whole song seems to get a little distracting during the vocal parts.  Maybe a slight volume or minor EQ adjustment to that particular cymbal during the vocals would tame it a little bit and keep the listening focus on the dynamite singing.  Of course that's a just a suggestion based on personal opinion, which is always subjective.

Anyway, fantastic song, Steve, I really love the vocals and the tasty guitar solo at the end, very  nice work!

Have a good one!

cool tune. has a unique Bruce Springsteen meets a bit of Bowie w/ some Nick Cave thrown in vibe. think you could mitigate the presence of the bell ride a bit or dial it in at a lower frequency so it 'sits' within the rest of the mix better.

I plan on remixing and doing the following:

vocal needs to come down slightly and less wet
Ride cymbal needs to really be reigned in.

I really appreciate the comments as you tend to lose perspective when you do everything yourself.

Nice song. The mix sounds like a compressor is pumping a bit too much especially on the drums. Makes them sound "funny" (not haha funny). I say this because I remember when I used to do this to drums myself.

Hi Steve , your drum patterns work but the mix on the drum track is very weak
sounding in my Monitor speakers .
I used Addictive Drums myself mostly and I do sometimes use Steven Slate drums too
together with my Addictive drums to get a fatter sound .
My most recent post " Air-Repo I'm using addictive drums only , anyway your song
is hot but the mix needs a boast .
The overall sound or mix is strugglying to get out there in my ears , fix that and that
       baby will really rock .

      Cheers -James
