Velocity layers are just as easy. Just stack the samples in the map editor and use the mouse to shrink them to just the velocities you want to trigger them, taking care to avoid overlaps and gaps. You may also want to tweak loudness, perhaps adding a dB to each successive layer so they play louder as you hit the keys harder.

And to top it off, check out Advanced Expression Technology.  This is a brilliant feature that can turn so-so velocity layers into completely convincing ones.  It may look complicated at first glance but it's actually quite simple to set up.

I'm thinking of trying to make a keys set, and planning to buy a download to the Kontakt 301 course .

I'm asking here to see if I can get a head start: If I were to record a series of notes on a keyboard, what time duration would be useful for the first try?

I ask this because I am thinking about playing the keys through one of my amplifiers and capturing the spring reverb.

Is there any general approach, say for example using the length of an 1/8th note at some particular bpm that is effective? Something like that maybe?

Well I just learned that when Ask Video sells you a "download" what they really sell you is a proprietary download player... you don't get to freely download the video content and store it where you wish.

I just bought a download of all the videos in Kontakt 301, but what I really bought was a download of a proprietary player. It felt like bait and switch. I went ahead and used a download tool to get my downloads as .mp4. The server shut my account down for downloading the videos that I purchased a "download" for.

How did you pay?  Sounds like this company is engaging in false advertising.  If it was a credit card, you could legitimately request that the charge be backed out.  I'm not sure how Paypal works, because I've never encountered a problem situation when paying with Paypal (knock on wood!!!).

I used PayPal.

I did eventually get the videos I paid for, after writing to them and having them restore my access, so I don't want to seek a refund. They are very good videos.

I just don't like the way the company, ASK Video, advertises the ability to download for offline use and only explains the details and gotchas after you make your payment.
