THANKS!

I recently read/saw somewhere that the Beatles had been accused for so long about putting backward voices and such into recordings that they actually decided to do that on of their Sgt Pepper's tunes (sorry my brain is a bit sketchy on details).

They did do some incredible things with some really primitive hardware.

Great post :)

Martin’s Bach-inspired Piano solo was written at a tempo that Martin himself couldn’t play. The engineers brilliantly recorded the part with the tape running at half-speed, so when it was played back at normal speed, the solo was an octave higher and twice as fast.
Very interesting...I've always thought of that as being the best harpsichord ride I'd ever heard.

Thanks Larry. That is an interesting read. The last part, about Oh Darling! explains a lot to me. I miss my vocal range and strength.

Lennon later did the same thing for Mother IIRC, trying to capture THE take at the end of each session.

It's strange to think that the most they spent on an album is a few months - yet, they did things like this, working out their vocals.

And that's for an actual band - four guys, each having their instrumental parts and their vocals to record. Not counting the guest musicians and orchestras, whose parts Martin had to write down before he actually got them in the studio and set them up to record.

All without the convenience of non-linear playback systems and digital editing.

All of that in a recording career that spans over only 8 years, the first half of which was split with tours and promo and making movies. Amazing.

I remember hearing once that The Beatles did sum stuff.

Is it true?
