I remember hearing once that The Beatles did sum stuff.

Is it true?

They were mathematicians? No, I never heard that.

I highly recommend the book Here, There and Everywhere, written by Geoff Emerick if you are interested in all the details of how they recorded and the things they did in the studio that was completely different from the norm of those days in time. They paved the way for most of the things that we take for granted today.

I remember reading something about John wanting to place a live mic underwater during either the Yellow Submarine's sessions or Octopus's Garden sessions and they stopped him before he electrocuted himself.

Another interesting technique was wiring up a guitar speaker to act as a microphone, to capture sound rather than push sound. Just really interest stuff through out this book, as well as plenty of discussion on how they interacted with one another and went about their work. I need to read it again, in fact. There is just so much to absorb.

Another great book is Recording the Beatles. It's expensive, but the amount of work that went into it explains why.

Here, There and Everywhere was a fun book and worth the read from a guy that was in the studio for hours on end with the Beatles and George Martin.  Just some enlightening and really funny stories.

Stuff like when Geoff experimented with using a rotating speaker (Leslie) for vocals ... John liked the effect so much he badgered him for a long time about hanging him (John) from a wire and spinning him around while Geoff recorded his vocals which they finally talked him out of trying.

A Canadian mathematician by the name of Jason Brown published work back in 2008 on work that he had done deconstructing Beatles songs.  He showed via Fourier Transform if certain notes were being played and if a half-speed technique was used ... pretty cool work.

After reading these links I wound up on iTunes. I was trying to figure out why I would buy a digital box set (The Anthology). I went to Amazon and listened to some samples and was about to buy it when I somehow ended up on Thebeatles.com where I saw a video of Paul pleading for "meatless Monday" and some climate change stuff. I decided to pass, I have the memories. I'm really glad I didn't buy it then see the video.

When I become a famous musician I am going to just sing my songs and go home.
