That weren’t no DJ, that was hazy cosmic jive!
I always loved this Ziggy Stardust David Bowie album, and now that it is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, I decided to try a cover of one of the songs on it.
So I gathered some local musicians I know and we had a go at it.
Here:  www.soundrecordingadvice.com/audio/Starman.mp3

Musicians are:
Vocals: Mitch Wilson (lead singer and lead guitarist for Lunar Maps and also for No Knife)
Electric Guitars: Chris Del Priore (lead singer and lead guitarist for Mesa Blue)
Acoustic Guitars: Kelly Gunning
Keyboards, Synths, Samplers, Bass, Drums: John Volanski

This was recorded using Sonar V8.5.3 at my home studio.  Used Rode NT-2A mics for the vocals and acoustic guitar (Martin D-28).  Used an ART Digital MPA as the mic preamp.  Computer interface was the Emu-1820m.
Electric Guitar (Stratocaster) was recorded direct through a Roland VG-88.
Bass: Alesis NanoBass
Drums: Dimension Pro
Strings: Kurzweil K2000RS, Kontakt 4, Edirol Orchestal, Dimension Pro
Synth: Korg MS2000R

John - good cover!  Mitch almost has that Bowie sound, but his timing is a little off at least on the verses.

guitars and keyboards are great - drums sound good;  mix is very well balanced.

good job!

I like what I heard very much.  I'm a big Bowie fan so this pleased me.  It's  hard to believe it's been 40 years.

If I didn't know the song was Bowie I would have thought it was Tom Petty covering a Beatles song.

Really nice!!!

Interesting. It does sound more Petty-ish vocal-wise in the verse, then gets Bowie-ish in the chorus. The guitars sound great except for the out of tune toy guitar at the intro.

Good shot at that classic Bowie tune.

Growing up in the South Jersey area in the 70's was a unique time. Bowie seemed to have a house gig at a club in Philly at the time. They were always advertising on the radio that Bowie was playing  "The Scene" every week or so...... Todd Rundgrund as well.

Nice job on the cover.

Thanks for all the comments folks!
Yes, I really do need to re-do that beginning section, it is definitely weak.
As for Ziggy Stardust, check out this link that has a BBC documentary on it.

And if you happen to like The Who/Quadrophenia, then there is a documentary on that also.

great cover of a classic. my only suggestion would be to adjust some of the kick drums hits as they are a tad rigid and a bit off in some places. nice work. this was an enjoyable listen.
