Hi,
I'm fairly experienced in making beats.
Brand new to Sonar. (Feels brand new anyway).

-I pick an 8 measure section of the song
-Lay down 8 measures of a kick-snare drum pattern
-Quantize it
-Select "sound on sound" recording parameter
-Lay down 8 measures of hi-hat on top of the previously recorded kick-snare pattern
-Quantize the hats
Now, when I try to cntrl-drag-copy it all to the next measure, I only get the last recorded thing ie; hi-hats only.
Why doesn't the copy function copy it all???

This makes it extremely tedious, if not impossible, to move the constructed beats around. For one thing, the kick and snare are still "underneath" the new hat pattern, but I can no longer access the kick pattern without deleting the hat sequence. It all plays fine when I run the sequence, but I cannot copy and move them around as a whole.
Am I going about it all wrong in Sonar? How do folks go about making beats?
Anyone know the answer?
Thanks

It's probably layered your 2 recording passes.

Open up your take lanes to verify.

I reckon you should be able to bounce to clip or something similar to get them all together

+1

bounce any take lane clips into one clip, get rid of empty take lanes and then you should be able to drag them around.

Yes unfortunately Sonar doesn't automatically merge midi clips, basically each take will be its own clip. The quickest solution is to right-mouse-button lasso select both, right click on the selection and choose "bounce to clip(s)". I made a key binding (CTRL+B) for it since it gets used a lot.

Alternatively, if you open the take lanes for that track you can keep the clips separate yet copy them simultaneously. This is one way to quickly and visually create sections or breaks with no hihats, or no kick/snare.

Have you tried creating the pattern in the step sequencer view?
