We live in a small town where pretty much everyone wants the cheapest of anything. We finally upgraded from Blackberry Pearl phones to iPhone 5 last July, will be eligible for an upgrade next July (2 years AT&T). When we were there ALL they had were 16G phones. I have NO songs on my phone, I don't have many photos, they go to Dropbox and iCloud so I delete them regularly. I have a little bit of IK stuff, Garageband, no songs stored... very few games, some weather apps, ESPN, just basic stuff. I went today to update to ios 8. I get a message that I need 4.6G of free space to install it. Give me a break!!!
I am going BACK to the AT&T store and try to get them to work with me but I also am "grandfathered" into an unlimited data plan that they HATE and would love to get me out of so I a guessing I am stuck with this. I may just buy a 64G iP 6 and set this 5 up for my grand daughter.
How on earth am I supposed to get down to 4.6G free space? It says I have 2.1G available and have used 11.2G where did the rest of the 16G go?
Crapple!

Do the upgrade using iTunes on your computer. It will use the space on you computer to extract the file and load it on your phone. That worked for me, I only had 2G of space left on mine.

Stop buying contract phones I suggest. Buy the phone outright and get a sim card. Insure the phone yourself if necessary
I know in the US choices are quite slim (almost zero competition) but there must be SIM only deals... Save money and be free...

An unlocked phone is REALLY expensive if you want a new one... and I don't want to lose that unlimited data plan. Though, I may end up doing just that if they push me.

Thanks, I will do that if I can figure it out. I really am a caveman. I just updated iTunes and iCloud for Windows.

Hi Jbow

As an Apple Certified Trainer, my advice would be to update to iOS 8 when a number of months have passed.  This allows some time for any teething issues to be fixed and for app developers to update their products.

Unfortunately Apple no longer support the option to roll back to previous iOS versions.  There are of course 'unofficial' ways to do this but will void the warranty on your device, so not ideal.

Also, Makeshift is correct, updating via iTunes is a better way to update rather than via the device.

Hope this helps.

Too late... It is done, using iTunes. I haven't tried much but everything seems fine. I set up iCloud Drive on my computer and phone.
Do you know if there is a way to use the cloud to increase my usable space? I am down to a little under 2G of space on my phone but I have about 22G on iCloud.
I guess I'm asking if the cloud space is usable or just for storage. Sometimes I am reluctant to delete all my photos, I guess they all go to the cloud and the box. If I buy the iTunes sync will I have access to all my albums that are in iTunes but not on my phone... but then through my phone? I'm thinking that what I'm going to need is a 32 or 64 G phone but I thought I'd ask if the cloud is good for anything other than storage?

Thanks!

I hardly bother with the cloud. Just sync photos via USB cable to move your phone data to your computer's hard drive.

Buy an external hard drive to back up your computer as and use something like acronis 2015 if it is a PC (plenty of alternatives as well) that way your Sonar data gets backed up as well...

I am about to buy a HD dock and Acronis, I'll get a separate smaller HD for this. I just sent payment for a new Studiocat PRO Mid Tower. Good idea.
Thanks!
