Beepster, I have to thank you for the suggestion.  I checked out CDBaby and I think I may give that route a try.  I've never tried selling music though.  I almost wish I could just pay for the exposure, but allow the music to be free.

Youtube is looking like a pretty good idea too.  Not sure how much people go to Youtube for music, but I'm trying that too.

Any time I want to find music by any artist, current or ancient, that's the first place I'll look.

Yeah, seems like a no brainer for online distro even just as a time saver. Even if you don't care about the money just being able to send them the tunes you want up and have them deal with all the various online accounts is worth it (like do you really want to juggle a dozen different accounts and upload to all of them every time you've got something new? Not me.) Then if you get a few bucks here and there... well ain't nothin' wrong with money.

BTW I think they will actually upload to Youtube for you as well. There is a list of sites they work with (it's like over a dozen I think) and you can choose which ones you want (or don't want) your music on. There is also an option to have them manufacturer actual CDs and stock them for stores (and I think there is no extra charge for this) but I have heard that service has gone downhill somewhat. Still... who DOESN'T want to have a professionally manufactured CD kicking around to show of to your buddies and girls of questionable repute.

Soundclick, Soundcloud, Box, Reverbnation, and a bunch of others.... they all work well.  Some have limits and pecularities but they are free. Work around the limitations and find others without those limits..... That's one reason I started using Box.com since the size limits are much much larger.

I would not pay for the services to host my music because they are making their money from adverts.

Exposure....??  Only what YOU personally can give the song by advertising it's presence on social media to your list of friends and fans. Beyond that, if you are paying them to promote it..... remember that thousands of others are likely doing the exact same thing..... so you're at the "front of the line" so to speak with thousands of other musicians .... more like a mob than an elite group.

When I signed up, of course they offered the premium services and I simply clicked no... just give me the free service.  I just need a place to store my songs and let people hear them from time to time. Nothing else, Thank you....!

As far as the ratings of Soundclick...... no one should take that seriously.   I have had a number of songs that reached #1 in sub category and placed rather high in the main category as well...and it looks impressive to see that there are 76,324 other songs in said categories...... however, when you realize the truth, that it only took 57 plays of the song to get to #1....... hummm..... not exactly like having a Billboard top 40 tune......

Yes...there was a guy that used to post over at Songs who was always touting his SC chart placing as some kind of quality confirmation for his music..he obviously never realized that it just meant he'd had a few clicks from the folks here, and the other 76,323 songs hadn't had any plays that week..

Yeah I posted an old 4-track recording of me and some friends doing a Motorhead cover on YouTube and I've had comments and even private messages about it. It helps if the video title or the tags contains things that people will be searching for.
