RE: Session Drummer 3 Kits
With 'Rock', I was talking about the 'ClassicRock' ... but others too 'Gretsch', 'JBSonar'?)
On the Drumkit(vs Mixer) page, double-click in the 'PROG' field to bring up the Progrem Browser. In the 'Acoustic' folder.
With 'Rock/Heavy' i was merely refering to the genres.

You obviously don't have Producer (X3).
For general info - ProChannel Softube Saturation Knob and Concrete Limiter add character and punch simply.
Alternative - I also get pretty good 'character and punch' from Punch Evolved (emulated 1176AE Limiting Amplifier Compressor). Only 32bit but works BitBridged in Sonar 64mode. 50% sale at the moment GBP9.99.

You mentioned using your existing MIDI clips. Thing is, different drum software may use different MIDI Mappings.
Mapping of Multisample kits like the Dead Winter Audio Yamaha Maple Kit can be done with a Drum Sampler. I just use Fretted Synth SoftDrum LTD (free).

Good on ya re the DrumMix Metal. Might as well download/install their free kit (actually it's 3 kits).

PS: I even had a bit of a play with SI Drums - other kits like 'Tasty' and 'Groovin' might even works with some 'punch'.

PSS: Tier-A product (ala AD2) these are not ... but the thread is budget conscious. (Regardless of whether ultimately you'll get a Tier-A product ;)).

Ah, thanks for clearing that up. And also thanks for pointing out two specific channel FX that can help. Actually, this brings up the major reason why I like sounds I can get "out-of-the-box", even though, as Glyn Barnes pointed out, that in itself can be a difficult task. The thing is, whenever I look into all these effects and tools that are offered, I'm a little overwhelmed by all the knobs and switches at one's disposal; there are so many combinations and permutations, and it seems like I have little idea on how I can get what kind of tone I want out of all the possibilities. In fact, unless I have some sort of comparison to a favorite song of mine (as I did here, fortunately), sometimes I myself am not sure what sound I'd like. Granted, going thru available presets and tweaking things here and there afterward helps, but there are still so many options.

I've had similar issues trying out AmpliTube on my newly acquired RealGuitar suite while trying for some rock guitar sounds (which I'm thinking of posting on this board when they advertise a sale, as others have done for other software; I love all the articulations that are offered in those programs!)

But anyway, yeah, I had mentioned before how the previous Session Drummer had an in-built compressor, and I wondered why Session Drummer 3 dropped that feature? In any case, I hope to use your tips as best as I can, as well as poke around myself still and see what other tools I can utilize.

Still, though, I hold the thread open to anyone who can point out (or even make!) a simple and/or free/cheap SoundFont or VST that emulates that Virtua Tennis sound or similar enough.

Thanks again, all!

Neither Session Drummer 2 or 3 have an integrated compressor. The original Session Drummer was not a soft synth. I believe you are confusing Session Drummer with SI Drums.

Crud, you're right, sorry about that. That's right, SI Drums is still available in X3, isn't it? For some reason I could only remember opening it in X1…
Still, I wish Session Drummer had that compressor, too…

Yes - the SI Suite is still in Sonar (and it's 64bit also).

MC6T/Sonar X3/Studio/Producer feature comparison.

Why am I tempted when I already have AD2 ?!

Friendly Floyd,

A couple of things I like to chip in with,
firstly for $29 the BFD Eco deal is money very well spent and far far better than any of the drums that ship with Sonar
although I'm assuming you don't have X3 otherwise you'd be using AD2.

Secondly, (and I'll make no apologies for this) Learn how to mix drums and create your own F#ing sounds.
I completely understand how overwhelming it is at first but there are so many tutorials and excellent videos on youtube that learning this stuff is so much easier than it ever was + you have lots of really useful people on here who are on hand to help 24/7.

I'm still not entirely sure what drum sound your after but if it's This then that shouldn't be too hard to create.
It's very verby and compressed and would take me about 10 minutes.

Steven Slate also has a lot of those kinds of heavy rock/metal sound but suffers from an awful interface IMHO.
