Although I've resigned myself to make music for the love and enjoyment of it, here is a plausible article for those still out there trying to "make it".

One of the few music-related articles I've read that makes sense from top to bottom.  Thanks for posting!

Yup. And in a way it's a bit sad because this article places the focus on ONE thing as if it was the only option - making pop music for teens, as if being the next Justin Bieber or Miley Cirus was the biggest achievement a musician could hope for.

I wish I knew when I grew up that there were many other options, besides being a pop star. I wish I had known about things like Cirque du Soleil, and that I could earn a very decent life playing for them. I wish I'd known that there are composers out there who hire people to assist them in their work. And dozens of similar options.

As it is, I wasn't even 20 that I'd given up on the idea of ever earning my life w/ music - other than a miserable life trying to make ends meet playing a few gigs here and there and earning just enough to buy a loaf of bread and peanut butter.

Rain,

I think you are correct about other options in the music arena, however, I think this article is intended to address those that want to make it in traditional music with songs - regardless of genre.  Although he mentions Bieber (Pop), he also mentions Moby (EDM) and death metal.  I don't think he was referring to doing music for video games, scoring films, commercials, etc.

Yep, agreed on that. :)
