Well specialty eyewear aside...and believe me I'd wear anything without shame...I decided to try Beepster's method of sitting with the guitar strap. And it made me realize that the classical position is really the only way to play guitar if you want rock solid stability and maximum dexterity. I played classical for years, specializing in Bach, and for those pieces with 3 or 4 independent voices on the go, you couldn't really play in any other position. It got so that trying to play with the guitar resting on my right thigh felt like building a card house on a water bed (and we've all tried that). It just felt weird and I wondered how I ever did it. Then I stopped playing classical for a couple of years due to tendon issues, and when I got back into guitar again recently by purchasing a Telecaster, I really wanted to get back into the "normal" way of playing, i.e. either standing or resting on my right thigh. I guess I didn't want to be that dork who played an electric in a classical position. Well, maybe I am that dork. I've been playing for an hour in the classical position (even got my footstool out) and that's it, I can't go back to the other way now

It's still my favorite way to play. You get maximum reach on the fretboard that way. I lost my footstool years ago. I just use a guitar case now.

Even playing with it on my right thigh I was always subconsciously looking for things to rest my right foot on to make it higher - and usually that "thing" ended up being my left foot, twisted onto its side. Not the most comfortable of positions but hey....

Another thing I'm rediscovering is just how important my right hand nails are. I used to maintain them obsessively for playing classical. I even walked around with clear lacquer on them as protection. That's probably easier to do in New York than some other places....

I've tried playing with a pick and even though I enjoy it, I don't think I'll ever have the kind of facility that I do when playing with my fingers. It just feels like you're more "in touch" with the instrument. Over the years I've learned how to stretch my fingers into unholy positions to do scale runs with one note per string. I have a sort of banjo chicken pickin' style going on which I could never do with a pick in a million years. The trouble is though that when my nails get long it freaks my girlfriend out ("No...no...I don't like those...not one bit") and I always end up cutting them and I just can't get that tone any more. Maybe this time I'm going to put my foot down and resist. I think what freaks her out most of all is that I file them to an upward slope going from left to right. Have to admit that looks pretty weird.
