The Maillard Reaction
Hi John,
I've got a Ampeg B15-NC here that has a bad 6L6 and the amp's owner probably doesn't have the extra money for real N.O.S.

How do you like the JJ 6L6GC tubes?

 Thanks.

Not fixr, but I've had good luck with the Ruby 6L6GCMSTR.
I really like their EL34's; of course not appropriate for the Ampeg.

:-)

I remember that you really like the EL34 and the EL84!

I'm sorry I didn't think to ask you too Tom. Thanks for your input. I first thought of John because he has been writing reviews of the new tubes and publishing them at the Tube Store.

As it turns out this amp needs some fresh coupling caps in the power section before anything else happens so I'm going to take the repair step by step.

I had not looked for, or found, John's review of 6L6 tubes until just a few moments ago:

I notice he didn't review the Ruby's.
I get them from Magic Parts in Petaluma, CA.
Some kind of "rebrand" I'm sure.
I guess I should ask.
I am an "EL" kinda guy!
A good Les Paul (I still have one), and some British "bite"; I'm good to go!

A day late and a dollar short. I just got my account fixed 20 min ago. I agree with Tom about Ruby tubes. They are not a manufacturer and just screen and label the tubes they get. For whatever reason, they seem to do a good job screening their tubes.

JJ tubes are pretty good and very popular because of their low price. I install lots of them. My personal choice is Tung Sol or TAD. The TS tubes are Russian and come out of the Reflektor plant, as do Sovtek, Mullard, Electro Harmonics and Gold Lion. TAD is a German company that buys tubes for re-branding and also has some proprietary product made in China. Very classic 6L6 sound and very popular with pickers.

I personally never buy NOS. I can get them, but I don't feel that the sound difference is worth the price difference. 2014 could almost be considered as the new age of tubes. In the 1980's we had very little to work with and took what we could get. Today there are many more choices available. I save NOS tubes for things like vintage studio gear.

If you ever have a tube  question just shoot me a PM. You can also visit www.thetubestore.com where a lot of my reviews and projects get posted. ""I'm not on the payroll and make no money from their sales.""

I put a complete set of JJs in my AC15 when I refurbished it. I'm very happy with them.

If you were much younger you'd recognize those sandals  and shirt and know that's no girl or cousin It! I think that's what ALL the guitar players looked liked back then. You were nobody if you weren't kicked out of school cuz of your hair and in a Rock band
