I find the less I "think", the better I play.

Don't forget, music "theory" is what lesser players/writers use to "explain" the things that "better" writers/players do.
Just sayin'...
At my age, music theory, like math, just makes my head hurt!

Are you serious?

IF you are:
Bill has now not only brought up an interesting post about how "conflicting" theoretical terminology of communicating minor with augmented ( or minor major 7ths) whether it be written or verbally communicated BUT he is also proof, without doubt, that your "words of wisdom" to explain musical "things" (as you say) is nothing more than an excuse for yourself as nobody with any ability to think at all could possible think that his knowledge of music theory has been detrimental to his guitar playing or creativity.

He is not a "lesser" player or "writer"- he is one of the most advanced and gifted guitarist to have contributed to the fora since I've been a member.

To many of the more advanced and talented members that are secure with themselves and have left rather than deal with the ignorant crap that's so often submitted. Rather than that happening I'd much rather read about how musicians deal with " theoretical contradictions" to communicate with others or process the information to hopefully add to their playing abilities.

If you're not serious....never mind.

If it gets "warmer" in here (this thread) it will be an argumentative chord! LOL
Perhaps, it's because of the demonic 7th........ or maybe a demented.....

My wife and I were talking, last night, about the place where I am completely flowing with the music and how that seems to be not like thinking, but it is a very high soaring place, and I am very glad to get there! I suppose it's more like channeling.....     Sometimes I would hear playback of recorded jams with my pals and say "that was really a cool lick, you did!" and they would say "that was you!" and I would have to listen to it to "learn" how to do it. That "place" fascinates me.

This is getting interesting! I remember a gig in Vail, CO; a wedding band gig with some guys I knew, but hadn't played with before. The leader leaned over and said "do you know _____?" No, I don't know of that one, but play it and I'll fit in". After we were about 2/3 of the way through the tune, he leaned over and said "you're playing all the licks!" I said "no kidding! Maybe I've heard it before, then!"
After almost 51 years of learning, gigging and teaching, it does feel "automatic" often. I am very alert and conscious when I am really flowing/jamming/inspired, which is pretty much the same as a hypnotic trance state. I am mindful, but it is not "regular" thinking.

Chronic amnesia is a terrible thing! I was looking and thought "Hey, I was wondering about that the other day!" Anyway, I've moved on to quartal harmony now and have to figure out what to do with four chords.

Bill, and others, as a keyboard player, I can slip finger up or down a black key and make all those chords work, and depending on what I do in my left hand, focus or support the chord.

I can drop a third or  add a pinky to make the 7th raised or dropped, other fingers diddle with the 3rd or 5th

Being a guitarist you have more of a spotlight on the chord formation and , from experience with my present guitarist, you can and will clash with proper chords.

IOW we can cover/fake quickly move to teh chord permutation, you, on the other hand, better know your s**t.

Here ya go : E Maj 9b5 - G-7#5 - F#11 - C Maj 7 is what I'm talking about. It keeps a minor 7 flavor I think is lighter and more pleasant to the ear
