Music Prototyping
The fundamental idea is to build up compositions from smaller
musical expressions that are combined to create a bigger structure. Much like traditional compositions build on a recognizable theme that is developed over time.
These so-called
phrases contain any number of
parameters that control the rendering of music (similar to automation lanes). Phrases can be gained from various sources: You can sketch them manually, record with a MIDI keyboard, or import from Standard MIDI files. You never need to worry about pitch and dissonance. Synfire makes them fit without compromising the original musical expression. Phrases can be shaped, stretched, mirrored, reversed, grouped, transposed and moved to different locations without corrupting harmony.
This new workflow is intuitive and fun. Instead of tinkering at the note level, you can design the
big picture from a comfortable distance. Being able to import, decompose and re-use arbitrary musical material from existing MIDI files, your productivity will explode.
