Music Prototyping

The fundamental idea is to build up compositions from smallermusical expressions that are combined to create a bigger structure. Much like traditional compositions build on a recognizable theme that is developed over time.
These so-called phrases contain any number of parameters that control the rendering of music (similar to automation lanes). Phrases can be gained from various sources: You can sketch them manually, record with a MIDI keyboard, or import from Standard MIDI files. You never need to worry about pitch and dissonance. Synfire makes them fit without compromising the original musical expression. Phrases can be shaped, stretched, mirrored, reversed, grouped, transposed and moved to different locations without corrupting harmony.
This new workflow is intuitive and fun. Instead of tinkering at the note level, you can design the big picture from a comfortable distance. Being able to import, decompose and re-use arbitrary musical material from existing MIDI files, your productivity will explode.
Users who worked with Synfire for a while can't imagine how they could have ever done without it. New refreshing ideas popped up all the time. This workstation is an inifinte source of inspiration. If you ever found yourself stuck in writer's block or felt unable to come up with new ideas, Synfire can help.

Record Once & Use Everywhere

Once you collected a critical mass of musical expressions in your personal libraries, the possibilities of using them in different projects are almost limitless. For a quick start, Synfire can also import everything MIDI you can get hold of and create phrases for you automatically. This way you can learn from traditional composers and popular songwriters and get inspired by their work.
The same phrase renders new music, depending on where it is being placed. Intuitive transformations can be applied that allow for easy motif development and musically sensible variation. Every composer who is worth his salt knows that building a piece from recurring motifs is key to an enjoyable listener experience. It makes a composition believeable and sound.

Sounds like a souped-up Matrix View.

It could be very inspiring. Or it could be your ticket to soulless, mechanistic accidental "composition".

Either way, for $1300 I'll have to let somebody else try it out and report back.

Yes...for $1300...I'll definitely sit on the sidelines...

Yeah, $1300, definitely isn't a cheap entrance ticket.  I could get a UAD 2 quad for that.

Yes, but will the UAD compose music for you?

This, alas, is always the conundrum....

That is pretty cool.  It sort of seems like the evolution of traditional arranger/auto-accompaniment keyboards into the full-fledged software/DAW realm of 2014.

At $1300 though, this line seems a little out of place for most - "Of course you are welcome to use Synfire just for fun, or to help you get started with the theory of music (both of which it is a great tool for!)."

It looks pretty cool.  But for $1300 it needs to be cooler yet, and make coffee 10 minutes before I get up.  Along with a few other things I can't mention in polite company.

Well, apparently it can learn things...
