I love watching old footage of Carl Sagan, and I've read a few of his books. The guy was a natural teacher who always seemed happiest when others were learning from him.

If you haven't already done so, I can heartily recommend reading his wonderful The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark (@Amazon: US | UK) - it's a fascinating and engrossing read from start to finish.

It's such a shame that we didn't often get to watch or listen to the man himself over here in The UK.

Got it playing in the background.  It became apparent that I don't really have to watch the video after a bit.

I'm finding it very interesting how far we've progressed since this was made - heck, even the Hubble telescope hadn't been launched when this was made...

I also find it humorous that Carl never said "Billions" which, I'm guessing, was to make the numbers more accessible to laymen.  Naturally, I found it interesting that, since this video was made, the U.S. debt went from "mere" billions to tens of trillions - an amount that is vastly outside of the common person's understanding.

The program Arthur is running is called "Fractint" and I used to have a company where we used that program to create posters and videos of fractals being color-cycled (the "black hole" animation you saw).  These were sold to some nightclubs in the late 80's.  Some of the poster fractals took over a week to create on the PC's of that time...

Hawking has a funny sense of humor.
